Not only is Russell T. Davies returning to usher in a new era of Doctor Who with Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, but another beloved showrunner is stepping back into the TARDIS.
Steven Moffat, the creative force behind the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras, is confirmed to be writing an episode for Gatwa’s debut season.
This news comes as a wonderful surprise for fans. Moffat was previously coy about returning but has now confirmed his return. His legacy on Doctor Who is undeniable.
He not only penned some of the show’s most critically acclaimed episodes but introduced the frightening Weeping Angels (fictional alien species, who look like stone statues and move super fast when no one is looking at them) to the universe.
Second Doctor Who Showrunner Returns in the 14th Season
The upcoming season of Doctor Who brings together elements from the past and present. Former Showrunners, Steven Moffat and Russell T. Davies join forces to showcase how the show has evolved over time. This collaborative spirit extends behind the camera as well.
BAFTA, Emmy, and Golden Globe nominee Julie-Anne Robinson will helm two episodes, including the season premiere. Robinson is known for directing popular shows like Bridgerton and Orange Is the New Black.
Her experience promises to deliver visually stunning and action-packed episodes. In a playful statement, Moffat expresses his enthusiasm for reuniting with old friends and working with the new Doctor.
His trademark humor suggests what viewers can expect from his episode. Check out his quote below on his return to the Whoniverse (via the official press release from BBC Doctor Who):
“Yes, okay, fair enough – apologies to everyone I’ve very slightly misled – I am in fact writing an episode of the series of Doctor Who. Exactly like I said I never would. What can I tell you? There was begging, there was pleading but finally Russell agreed to let me have another go – so long as I got out of his garden. Working with old friends and a brand new Doctor I couldn’t be happier. Sorry I was a bit reticent on the subject for so long. It was all part of an elaborate plan that would have delighted millions but at the last minute I forgot what it was.”
News of Moffat’s return has sent shockwaves through the Doctor Who fandom. Check out some fan reactions:
