Alan Wake 2 creative director Sam Lake took to Twitter to announce the return of the Quantum Break actor, Shawn Ashmore. Despite the game’s visible ties to the Remedy Connected Universe, he will not reprise his role as Jack Joyce. As announced in the video message, he will play the new character, Sheriff Tim Breaker.

In the video, the actor expresses his excitement to:

be part of the game with [his] friends at Remedy Entertainment,” and adds “Please stay tuned. We’ll release more details about my character, Tim Breaker, and I hope you enjoy playing it.”

All we know about Ashmore’s new character in the highly anticipated sequel are his name and occupation. But that hasn’t stopped a whole barrage of theories regarding his role’s greater meaning from emerging.

Ashmore will play a sheriff called Tim Breaker in Alan Wake 2. For fans of the original game, this should ring a bell: He has the same last name and occupation as Bright Falls Sheriff Sarah Breaker, making it safe to allude there is a connection between the two. Even though the upcoming sequel is not tied to 2016’s Quantum Break, Ashmore’s reappearance adds to the growing web of the so-called Remedy Connected Universe.

While it’s unlikely his characters Jack Joyce and Tim Breaker are tied or the same person, the name choice has led to a ton of speculations about a connection on a deeper level. Given Quantum Break’s time-travel theme and the protagonist’s unique time-bending capabilities, the name Tim Breaker may be a ‘time breaker’ pun. Will he have temporal powers in Alan Wake 2 as he did in Remedy’s 2016 game? In any case, Remedy has been known for hiding Easter eggs in its games, and the return of Ashmore may just be one to add to the list.

While we may see further intel and hear more theories on the new character in the upcoming weeks, we will have to wait for Alan Wake 2’s launch to find out who Tim Breaker really is. Thankfully, that date is getting closer rapidly. We had to wait almost a decade and a half for Alan Wake to finally return. Now, after a recent delay, the game is set to launch on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 on October 27, 2023.

Ahead of Halloween, we will be able to find out what Alan Wake has been up to in the past 13 years and experience a brand-new iteration in the franchise. Alan Wake 2 won’t just include two protagonists instead of one, it will also focus much more on survival horror, inviting fans to try to survive The Dark Place.

Are you as excited as we are to experience the mind-bending nightmares in Alan Wake 2 and return to The Dark Place? Let us know in the comments and on our social feeds! We would love to hear your thoughts.
