Who is Sokka in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered in 2005 and ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon before it ended in 2008. The series chronicled the story of Aang, the avatar, as he mastered his powers over the elements to bring balance to the four nations.

Sokka was an important character, and he hailed from the Water Tribe. He, along with his sibling Katara, discovered the hero who had encased himself in ice when he got caught in a storm. He was naturally wary of Aang, and he did not think he could save the world. However, with time, his belief in Aang grew, and he knew the hero would usher in a time of peace.

Sokka quickly became one of the fan-favorites, as his character developed into a Water Tribe Warrior. He did not have any bending powers though. Despite this, he was a light-hearted and loving character, who became the protagonist’s brother-in-law when Katara married Aang.

The series got a sequel called The Legend of Korra, and a few characters from the original series made it to the new show. Unfortunately, the beloved Water Tribe Warrior was not one of them. Sokka’s absence raised a lot of questions since The Legend of Korra only made vague hints about his demise in the timespan set between the shows. However, an upsetting fan theory suggests that he might have been murdered.

Could Sokka really have been killed?

Korra is Aang’s successor and her story unfolds in The Legend of Korra as the new avatar. The series did not delve deeply into the lives of the characters seen in the original show. Sometimes, only passing references were made about legacy characters.

The show also had many iconic anti-heroes, and Zaheer was one of them. In the third season, he leads a team of benders from the Red Lotus to capture Korra. While on the run, she learns that the organization had tried to kidnap her from the Southern Water Tribe when she was young, but Tonraq, Zuko, and Sokka dashed their plans.

It would make sense that the warrior would take on Zaheer since they were both non-benders. Moreover, the series alluded to it being the last time the character was alive. Zaheer would never hesitate to kill his enemies. Even the scar from the injury on his head looked like it was made by the warrior’s boomerang.

The series later confirms Tonraq as the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, the position that the warrior held in the original series. All these hints point to the character falling during battle, quite possibly dying at the hands of Zaheer.

The show never really confirmed how the beloved character died. If this theory does indeed come to pass, it will be devastating for the fans.
