But more than the premise, it’s the characters that make a sitcom iconic, and this show was no exception. With a stellar cast doing an absolutely wonderful job, it wasn’t hard to fall for all of them. And among them, Gina Linetti was the one that became the show’s highlight for many. But when Chelsea Peretti auditioned for the show, she was actually gunning for the role of Rosa Diaz.

It’s no surprise that when it comes to sitcoms, good character designs are just as important if not more than a good storyline. Thus, the success of NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine can be credited to its amazing ensemble of characters that will forever remain in your head after you give the show a watch. Chelsea Peretti is a fine example of how you can make an absolutely absurd character like Gina Linetti both plausible and iconic.

But when people learn that the star actually auditioned for the role of Rosa Diaz in the show, they have trouble picturing her as that character.

In a past interview (via HuffPost), the Big Mouth star revealed that she had actually auditioned for the role that later went to Stephanie Beatriz, but the character wasn’t called Rosa during that time. She remembers that she was later called up by the showrunners saying that she didn’t bag the role. But to her surprise, they revealed that they were actually writing a character that was specific to her and not part of the original plan. She said:

“Should I drop a bomb? I initially auditioned for the part of Rosa, which was not called Rosa at the time, Did not get it, but they called me and were like, ‘We’re going to write a different part for you.’ So my part was not in the script that I initially read.”

Since Peretti was familiar with Dan Goor and Michael Schur after working with them in Parks and Recreation before, they had little difficulty curating a character for the actress, and the rest is history.

From Jake Peralta’s ridiculous obsession with Die Hard to Amy Santiago’s lethal discipline for rules and regulations, every other character’s weird quirks seem to culminate into the narrative of the show in a unique way. Along with that, the premise of the show being based in a police precinct made the comical element of the show that much more entertaining and funny to witness.
