Live-service games are all the rage nowadays. These games are usually always online and allow players to get into matches with their friends. They also have a bunch of features, such as a battlepass and an item store, to make things interesting and keep players spending. The latest success in this genre is none other than Helldivers 2.
This game launched with a surprisingly positive response from every direction. Fans are loving it, and critics cannot stop singing its praises. But this does not mean this game is perfect in every way imaginable. Actually, there are some faults in it, and one of them is a fault some other games wish they had.
Helldivers 2 developer is looking into a glaring issue their new game is facing
One thing that matters most to a developer of a live service or games as a service title is its player count. And let’s be honest here: Helldivers 2 faced no problem meeting that criterion; this game was an instant hit.
Its success is such that, at its launch, it surpassed God of War in consecutive player counts on the Steam storefront. This is not a small achievement for a game that does not have as big a fanbase as the above-mentioned Sony first-party franchise.
The game itself is a sequel to overhead shooter Helldivers, which launched back in 2015 for the PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. The reason for its launch on so many platforms was the fact that it featured co-op play as its central mechanic.
The sequel does the same; it has only launched on PlayStation 5 and PC. Gameplay-wise, it also makes a bunch of shifts from its predecessor. One of them is that this game takes the camera and moves it from an overhead view to an over-the-shoulder third-person view. Secondly, it has increased the scope of its levels tenfold, making it a much better-looking game with a larger scale.
But not everything is perfect in this title; there are some issues with it too. One issue is that this game has a glitch that prevents players from earning their rewards after they complete the missions. Developers have already announced that a fix is coming for this issue.
The second is something that the developer of Helldivers 2 might be a bit proud of. It is a fact that the game is already running out of servers to cater to the continuously growing player count. No doubt, the game is incredible, and its player count is rising by the hour.
This player count is no surprise either; this game is already surpassing Call of Duty and Fortnite on PlayStation 5. So what do the developers have to say about it? When someone asked the CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios about the servers, his reply was, “It’s being worked on 24/7.” It’s good to hear, and here’s hoping it gets fixed soon enough.
After all, the game is already going beyond the expectations its developers and publishers had of it. This means they had planned for a much smaller player count. Yet, if they are fixing these issues continuously without any major setbacks, it’s awesome to know and commendable.
It’s an interesting era in gaming
With the success of Helldivers 2, it can be officially said that the video game industry has entered an era where gamers prefer gameplay over brand. This is evident from the fact that in 2023, Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 sold incredibly well and garnered a large fan following too. On the other hand, a much-anticipated game like Starfield failed to meet expectations.
The same is happening for Helldivers 2 too. It’s a game that no one ever expected to be such a smashing hit, yet here it is, breaking all kinds of records.
