A classic but underrated Suda51 game from 2011 is making its way back into our current gaming catalogue. The third-person shooter video game from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era is finally getting remastered for modern consoles. And we couldn’t be more ecstatic!
Goichi Suda’s Grasshopper Manufacture released Shadows of the Damned to generally favorable reviews back in 2011. More than a decade later, realizing the untapped potential of the game, the developer is remastering it for the new generation. Shadows of the Damned was originally a collaboration between Suda51 and Shinji Mikami.

A Hidden Gem from Suda51
Shadows of the Damned, considered to be one of the best Suda51 games, is an interesting combination of Shinji Mikami’s iconic Resident Evil 4-esque gameplay and Suda51’s unique but hilarious sense of humor. However, even though the majority of gamers who actually played the title found it entertaining, it didn’t exactly break any sales records. And publisher Electronic Arts was obviously not satisfied with that outcome.
A while back, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or EA Play subscribers actually got an unexpected chance to try Shadows of the Damned. It was a perfect opportunity for members to get familiar with and discover the forgotten Suda51 game as it became conveniently available to them. Similar to its original release in 2011, though, it still didn’t receive the traction it rightfully deserved, and it was ultimately taken off the services.
Since then, the Suda51 title has been absent from all of the digital game stores, with no hopes of ever returning or being rediscovered by the masses. Fortunately, the remaster announcement should mean that Shadows of the Damned gets its long-overdue attention and is played by a larger number of people. The third time’s the charm, right?

More Details Regarding Shadows of the Damned Remastered
Fans of the Suda51 classic were looking forward to more substantial updates on the remaster during a special stream by Grasshopper Manufacture, which took place on June 14. But no further information about the targeted platforms or even a release date was provided by the developers during the anticipated event. About a month has passed since then, and we still don’t have any development updates on the remastered version of Shadows of the Damned.
For the past six years, Grasshopper Manufacture has only been focusing on projects related to their No More Heroes series. The Shadows of the Damned remaster is the first time in half a decade that Suda51 is developing something other than that IP. 2019 saw the release of Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, whereas two years later, in 2021, the highly anticipated No More Heroes 3 was released.
Although Suda51 and Grasshopper do not exactly have the greatest track record with Shadows of the Damned, fans of the developer are looking forward to replaying the game with updated visuals. It’s definitely intriguing to wait to see exactly how the remaster will be different from the original classic.
Hopefully, this remaster of the Suda51 game will be a financial success. That is the only way we will ever get a sequel. Because if it bombs, Shadows of the Damned will forever be banished to the dark shadows and will probably never be talked about again.
