It’s an amazing time to be a Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi fan, as Bandai Namco has unleashed another exhilarating trailer for the next installment. With a theme called Master and Apprentice for the footage, there’s a lot to unpack, ranging from more characters confirmed to be joining the roster to stages that look like they’ve been taken straight out of the anime.
But there’s one gameplay mechanic that also gets featured in Sparking Zero‘s latest trailer that Budokai Tenkaichi 3 players will recognize, as it’s making a comeback in its most refined state.
One of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3’s Signature Moves Returns
Remember the good old Budokai Tenkaichi 3 days when an opponent got close and tried attacking the players’ character, only for every punch and kick to be evaded and the enemy’s Ki deteriorating in the process?
The move was called Sonic Sway, and it was named for the first time in the 2007 Dragon Ball game, making it an effective defensive mechanic to turn the tide of the battle. And at the one-minute mark in the latest Sparking Zero trailer, Gohan is seen dodging the attacks that his future wife, Videl, tries hitting him with.
Not only does Sonic Sway let players quickly dodge incoming attacks at close range, but it also allows for an opening to perform a counterattack, as Gohan gets the opportunity to kick Videl away from him for some space. The move has made its way into other Dragon Ball games as well, such as Xenoverse 2, but it was limited to a few fighters.
Budokai Tenkaichi 3 was the only mainline game that let every character on the roster perform it, and its comeback in Sparking Zero is an exciting reveal.
Gohan Takes Center Stage in the New Sparking Zero Trailer
Master and Apprentice feels like the perfect theme for Gohan, who has been both a teacher and a student in various Dragon Ball sagas.
So it’s only natural for Bandai Namco Entertainment to reveal four variations of the Z fighter in the new Sparking Zero trailer, ranging from his Kid version training with Piccolo when Goku dies protecting Earth from his brother Raditz to his Adult variant teaching Videl during the Great Saiyaman Saga right before the World Tournament begins.
But Gohan’s standout appearance in the latest footage is his Future version, who loses his arm because of the Androids, which was around the time he trained Trunks (Sword) to be prepared for the upcoming threat.
The History of Trunks is one of the most tragic Dragon Ball stories ever created, and witnessing the dystopian world and characters like Trunks (Sword), Gohan (Future), and both of their Super Saiyan forms in the trailer promises an extraordinary installment in the Budokai Tenkaichi series.
