The eagerly awaited sequel to 2021’s Dune, helmed by Denis Villeneuve, is shaping up to be a huge success at the box office, and that’s not just good news for die-hard fans of the science fiction epic. With Box Office Pro predicting staggering numbers, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya fans are looking forward to the release of Dune 2 and the possibility of a threequel.
According to Box Office Pro, Dune: Part Two is expected to make a big splash at the box office, with an estimated opening weekend gross of $50 million to $75 million. These numbers alone give us an idea of the enormous popularity that the movie has achieved, driven by the enthusiastic following it accumulated with its predecessor. Notably, Dune earned $108.3 million at the domestic box office.
Given the success of the first film, it is reasonable to assume that there will be much higher box-office expectations for Dune 2.
Dune 2 Box Office Projection: A Bright Future for Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya’s film
The Box Office Pro projections for the Dune sequel speak volumes about the intense excitement and fervor surrounding its release. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and their devoted fans have every reason to rejoice, as the film’s potential success opens the door for future installments. Dune 2 is expected to open with a first-weekend gross of $50 million to $75 million, according to Box Office Pro.
The thrill does not end there, though. With a potential domestic box office run of $125 million to $195 million, it is expected that the upcoming movie will continue to hold its dominant position at the box office. This news will excite fans of Zendaya, Chalamet, and the entire Dune universe, who have been eagerly awaiting the chance to embark on yet another thrilling journey.
As per Screen Rant, the delay of Dune 2 has reportedly increased the likelihood that the Dune franchise will shatter the first film’s box office records. This is because some competitor films have also shifted with the new release date.
Disney postponed Snow White, so its biggest rival at the box office will now be Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 (March 22, 2024), which will be released two weeks after Dune: Part Two. Chalamet’s film has little competition, so it can relax and watch as its global box office takes off.
Will There Ever Be Dune 3? Fans Desperate For Threequel
Next month, Dune: Part Two will be released in theaters. Denis Villeneuve will once again serve as both director and co-writer, and the entire ensemble will be back. Given the excitement surrounding the film, can we expect a threequel? The possibility of Dune 3 appears to be confirmed by some new quotes Villeneuve has released.
The writer-director confirmed as much in an interview with Time, saying:
“Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me.”
According to Variety, Villeneuve stated at a press conference in December that the script for Dune 3 is currently being written:
“The screenplay is almost finished but it is not finished. It will take a little time… there’s a dream of making a third movie… it would make absolute sense to me.”
Additionally, the Dune cast has offered their opinions on the potential trilogy. Timothée Chalamet told Total Film:
“The idea excites me very much. If the time and opportunity comes to complete the story with Messiah, I think we’re all super enthusiastic about that.”
The possible success of Dune 2 means more to its fans than just breaking box office records. With the projected success of the upcoming film acting as a catalyst for a potential continuation of the beloved saga, fans are hoping for a threequel as they await the sequel’s release. Let’s see some of the words from fans via X:

Nice. Can't wait.
I don't know if book 3 and beyond are good movie material, but I think you could do a very interesting tv series. Maybe animated so you don't have to reduce the scale.— mr.miesfies (@Mr_Mies_Fies) January 27, 2024
we need it. the world needs it

When will be released 2nd and 3rd part?

It should stay a trilogy. The books after messiah get very weird (not in the good way) and wouldn’t really work well on screen

Since the first movie’s release, Gen Z and young millennials have grown to love Chalamet and Zendaya. The addition of Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and other cast members to the sequel’s ensemble cast could greatly increase its appeal to younger audiences compared to the first Dune film.
