Marvel Studios has long been celebrated for its unparalleled ability to craft captivating narratives, shrouded in secrecy and brimming with unexpected twists. Yet, it seems to have no idea about its upcoming Agatha. Marking the return of Kathryn Hahn as the titular witch, the series has yet again gotten a name change.

While fans are certainly confused, believing that might be a marketing stint, even the Chief Brand Officer of Disney’s Marketing unit is confused after Marvel tweeted a hilarious name change for the upcoming show. Although the tweet has since been deleted, fans have been busy speculating what these various name changes can mean.

A spin-off to WandaVision, Marvel Studios; Agatha follows the titular character of Agatha, played by Kathryn Hahn. Expected to be a dark comedy with some mischievous traits, the details of the show are scarce. But the show is to begin after the events of WandaVision finale, which featured the Scarlet Witch having contained Agatha and all her magic taken away.

While Marvel Studios hasn’t been consistent about what the show is going to be or when it will be released, it sure is consistent with all the name changes. It was initially announced as Agatha: House of Harkness in July 2022, only to be later changed to Agatha: Coven of Chaos. And in September 2023, it was yet again changed to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (via Variety).

Marvel Studios, yet seemed to have changed the name again. In a tweet by the official handle of Marvel Studios, which was deleted minutes after, the new name for the series was revealed as— Agatha: The Lying Witch With Great Wardrobe.

An unmistakable parody of the first Narnia book/film, Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, even Disney’s Chief Brand Officer and the President of Marketing, Asad Ayaz was left confused by the sudden name change. While neither Ayaz nor Marvel Studios later acknowledged the incident and the sudden name change, several fans allege that it is part of the marketing campaign, befitting of a character like Agatha.

Fans React To Marvel Studios Changing Agatha’s Name, Again

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet whether the newest title remains or not, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is apparently Agatha: The Lying Witch With Great Wardrobe. Agatha, in the Marvel Universe, is known best for her penchant for shenanigans and often manipulative actions. If anything, the upcoming TV show’s constant name changes pay an ode to its total character instead of exposing Marvel’s indecisiveness or troubled production.

As the now-deleted tweet went viral, fans were quick to react and stated that it was all probably part of the marketing campaign.

Supposed to be a deliberate marketing strategy, the constant name changes are definitely working as netizens are busy talking about it. Featuring how Agatha regains her powers after escaping imprisonment in Westview, the marketing campaign has made fans eagerly wait for the upcoming series.

Agatha is expected to be released by late 2024 on Disney+.
