Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Bethesda’s Fallout video game series is proving to be a raging hit with fans and critics. It has been lauded with praise for its acting, action set pieces, and faithfulness to the source material. The series features Aaron Moten as Maximus, a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel.
However, unlike most actors who embark on the quest to tackle a live-action video game adaptation, Moten did not rely on playing the Fallout games to learn more about the source material. Instead, the actor opted for an alternative method that helped him prepare for his role. Here is what Aaron Moten revealed about his preparation for his role in Fallout.
Aaron Moten Reveals The Reason He Did Not Play the Games Before Fallout Role
Actor Aaron Moten made a name for himself with roles in shows such as Disjointed and Next. He also had a supporting role in the Will Smith-led historical thriller Emancipation. However, Moten’s most high-profile role comes in the live-action adaptation of the Fallout video game franchise.
Therefore, it might surprise fans that Moten went into the role without playing the games to familiarize himself with the source material. During an interview with Firstpost, Moten spoke about how he prepared for his role in Fallout, revealing he opted not to play the games. He said:
“I didn’t play the game to do that, but I did, you know, find myself watching other people play, now online, YouTube, and Twitch and you know watching especially season players, you know, people who really know what they’re doing. It didn’t have to be a discovery to me.”
Moten’s comments imply that he wanted to learn about the world of Fallout and its nuances from those who are already experts in that context. Therefore, instead of taking the traditional route of playing the games himself, Moten relied on the video footage and streams of seasoned gamers to learn more about the franchise.
Aaron Moten Explains Why He Found Fallout‘s Script Surprising
During the same interview, Moten also spoke about being surprised by the scripts for the television series, particularly because he was unaware of the overall tone and vibe of the video game franchise. As a result, Moten felt challenged by the material he was given to work with.
“The scripts to me were a surprise. I didn’t know the tone of Fallout. After reading the script I felt surprised how this comedy aligned so well with this post-apocalyptic, political satire. My challenge was where did this come from? So I wanted to get right into the world.”
Moten’s statement further expands upon why the actor avoided playing the games himself. Moten implied that he relied on supplementary content to learn about the world of Fallout, allowing him to directly get a feel of the source material’s tone.
At the same, Moten also stated that he drew inspiration from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar while preparing for the role. Moten explained that the character of Cassius and his struggles with his ambition informed his performance in the series.
