Kentaro Miura’s Vision for Berserk Was Beyond Good and Evil

Berserk, the manga by Kentaro Miura, is known as one of the scariest horror mangas globally. It is loved for its exceptionally dreadful and horrifying foes.

In the story, Guts is presented as a man who battles against demons named apostles. He actively seeks out and kills monsters that consume humans. But, Guts himself becomes the prey when he acquires a cursed brand attracting demons and spirits towards him.

However, in an interview Kentaro Miura gave, he said that he didn’t want to restrict the world of Berserk only to demons and gods as enemies.

Kentaro Miura said,

“This is just what I try not to go with. If they are defined with words like gods, demons or something, it feels like the world is limited, revealing everything, and there’s no room for extension. Anyway, these things are kind of what humans created. And (they are) what humans’ spirits are materialized as. This is a question like “who was first between the chicken and the egg?” though. All of them are a mirror of humans. I think their image should be no more than that. I only want to use them as an element that the readers can sympathize with.”

Miura wished for symbols to hold more significance within the story. Instead of a basic “good versus evil” plotline, he aimed to craft a complex manga that went past such simplifications.

But in our time, it’s seen by many new fans as exactly this: a story about one tough guy named Guts who swings his sword to beat gods and demons down. This is the opposite of what Miura was trying to create with his complex manga.

Why Berserk Anime Needs A Remake

A new anime show is being made to adapt an old manga series. This trend has been growing, including shows that first aired more than 20 years ago. Most of the time, these remakes are created for the purpose of presenting original manga on screen in a manner that aligns with its story and art style.

The manga series of Berserk has grown in popularity over time. Therefore, a new anime version that can faithfully convey the story from manga would be an easy choice for fans.

Indeed, followers have also attempted to produce a similar work. They made an anime called Berserk: The Black Swordsman, which is not official but was created by fans. The goal of this project is to offer a more loyal adaptation of the narrative in animated form.
