Tom Holland became a household name thanks to his portrayal of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Peter Parker, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Following in the web-slinging footsteps of Andrew Garfield, Holland made his debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. He then went on to star in his own Spider-Man trilogy – Homecoming, Far From Home, and the record-breaking No Way Home – becoming the youngest actor to ever play the iconic hero on the big screen.
Amidst major announcements for Deadpool and the Fantastic Four, there’s speculation that a Spider-Man update might be in the works. However, when it comes to deciding who will lead the highly anticipated film, it appears that Sony Chief Tom Rothman and Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige have differing opinions.
Different Opinions About Who Should Helm the Film
Back in 2022, in an interview with Deadline, Sony’s chief Tom Rothman hinted at exciting things to come for Spider-Man. He basically said they’re itching to get rolling on the next movie and even mentioned hoping to keep the whole dream team – director Jon Watts, Tom Holland, and Zendaya – together.
When asked by the interviewer if Holland, Zendaya, and director Jon Watts would be a part of the continuation, Rothman responded, “That whole group, we hope.”
On the other hand, as per scooper Daniel Richtman, Kevin Feige has been hoping for a fresh creative team to take charge as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man embraces a more grounded approach, now that he appears to be untethered from the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. This would offer an opportunity to reshape his future within the franchise.
Jon Watts has been at the helm of all three of Holland’s Spider-Man films, each earning acclaim from both critics and audiences. Speculation arose last year, suggesting that Drew Goddard was a top contender to succeed Watts. This speculation aligns with rumors surrounding Spider-Man 4, which is said to include Daredevil and Kingpin. Given Goddard’s involvement in creating the earlier Netflix series, it would be a logical choice for him to take on the directorial role for the upcoming Spider-Man installment.
Fans Give Reasons for Kevin Feige’s This Decision
As to for what reason, Kevin Feige wants a new man behind the camera rather than someone who has prior experience in helming the franchise, fans have shared their views regarding this.
Tom Rothman plays it safe…and right now Feige simply cannot afford to

Jon Watts did an amazing job with Tom’s trilogy. I would love to have him back.

However, some fans think Sony is rushing things.
Get a new director, It’s time to switch things up and let another director get a shot

This is why Sony always ends up failing. They try to rush things and not wanting to make changes for the better.

Meanwhile, Goddard received an Academy Award nomination for penning the script of The Martian. Interestingly, he was also initially set to direct the project but opted to direct the scrapped Sinister Six project for Sony. His writing credits include acclaimed series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, and Lost. He also penned scripts for films like Cloverfield and World War Z.
