In an earlier interview with Kazenshuu in 2018, the creator spoke about how the illustration was conceived and what inspired him to write this series that became a rage across the world. Interestingly, it was martial arts star Jackie Chan who served as the muse for Toriyama’s genius to take shape.

“As it happened, at that time I loved Jackie Chan’s movies and had seen Drunken Master dozens of times. Since I liked that sort of thing, Torishima-san advised me to try and make a kung-fu shōnen manga, so I drew a one-shot called Dragon Boy. That got an incredibly positive response from the readers, so I decided to go that route for my next serialized work”.

From humble thoughts and beginnings, Toriyama succeeded in creating a piece of work that will always be regarded as the benchmark in the field of Japanese anime and manga.
