Known for her roles in Euphoria and The Handmaid’s Tale, Sydney Sweeney recently opened up during an SXSW Q&A session about her dream director. No, he is not Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan; rather, she would prefer to collaborate with Martin Scorsese.
This may surprise some people considering Nolan’s standing as a visionary director, who recently won the Oscar for Oppenheimer. That being said, the two-time Emmy-nominated actress, 26, might have been drawn in by Scorsese’s storytelling and character development.
However, her admiration for Scorsese might not necessarily lead to any Academy Award wins. Despite being regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, the Taxi Driver director has been snubbed by the Academy on several occasions.
In fact, many actors who have appeared in his films, including Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matt Damon, have been frequently ignored by the Academy Awards.
Not Christopher Nolan, Sydney Sweeney’s Dream Director is Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese is one of the few directors in cinema who can capture the essence of a story. His films are masterworks of storytelling, brimming with passion, depth, and emotion.
Thus, Sydney Sweeney said that working with Scorsese would be her dream come true during a Q&A session on Tuesday in her SXSW chat (via The Hollywood Handle). Who could blame her? Scorsese’s films are known for their intense drama, gritty realism, and unforgettable characters, which Sweeney definitely excels at bringing to the screen.
The Immaculate actress has already been nominated for two Emmys for her work on The White Lotus and she last appeared in the romantic comedy Anyone But You. Given that Scorsese is a genuine master of his trade, Sweeney’s admiration for him makes sense. However, it isn’t uncommon for actors and directors with the greatest skills to fall short of recognition at the Oscars.
While working with Scorsese is certainly going to be a highlight for Sweeney, it might not earn her the recognition that many in the film industry strive for. Why? Documenting his career in the film business, the director has been nominated ten times for an Academy Award. Regretfully, he has only taken home one golden statuette.
Fans can even agree on this:

That’s awesome like she’ll recognize herself to be an a-list actress and to be an Oscar winner actress one day, I think she should be casted for his next movie of Jesus 👀

Also, actors like Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, and Leonardo DiCaprio have often been overlooked by the Oscars, despite their incredible performances in Scorsese films. Sweeney must reconsider her list of favorite directors!
Martin Scorsese’s Love-Hate Relationship With The Oscars
Martin Scorsese and the Oscars have a long and turbulent love-hate relationship. Fans and critics alike have always been in disbelief over the legendary director’s decades-long honoring and ignored by the Academy. His Oscar journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with both ground-breaking masterpieces and startling oversights.
One of the clearest examples of this love-hate relationship occurred in 2007 when his crime drama The Departed finally won him a Best Director Oscar. Even though Scorsese is a master of cinema and has a long list of critically acclaimed films to his credit, it took the Academy decades to finally acknowledge his unmatched brilliance.
But just when it appeared that the Academy Awards had finally embraced Scorsese, they abandoned him once again. In 2019, his epic gangster film The Irishman was overlooked for major awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. Although the film was hailed as a masterpiece by both critics and audiences, the Oscars largely ignored it.
Hugo, The Wolf of Wall Street, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and Killers of the Flower Moon are among his films that have received Academy Award nominations.
Regardless, the Oscars may come and go, but Scorsese’s place in the pantheon of great filmmakers remains firm. And maybe that’s the most rewarding thing of all!
