Helldivers 2 is a video game about intergalactic war and every bullet counts. Players have made suggestions to help improve the game and make the experience somewhat smoother, but director Johan Pilestedt means to protect the sense of realism first.

In reality, soldiers are weary of their shots and always keep track of the number of bullets left in each magazine. The director could improve the capacity but it would take a lot of work. The developers will have to tweak the 3D asset of the magazine to make it believable.

Johan Pilestedt Wants a Realistic Experience for Helldivers 2

While it is possible to increase the ammo capacity of each magazine, the developers will need to change the model of the magazines as well to add a sense of realism. Pilestedt is right; if a small clip carries hundreds more than it should, then it would look rather odd. However, the director is always listening to fan suggestions, like the idea of being able to swap the weapons of Pelican-1 which was an early concept by the developers that has yet to be implemented.

It also stands to reason that the majority of the hostile forces are bullet sponges, which can be a side effect of nerfing the weapons for the sake of balance. Even the director noticed that the efforts of the team had gone too far and made the game a pain to play and not as fun as it used to be. Perhaps this will push the developers to take on the challenge of balancing the game on a different approach.

Players were vocal about the nuisance of having to reload while in the middle of a battle and how one magazine is not as sufficient as it used to be to eliminate an opponent, maybe the omnipotent game master is having way too much fun, hampering the war effort. It wasn’t long ago when the community openly called out Joel and demanded a tougher challenge and maybe he is retaliating in a gruesome fashion by making enemies more impervious to bullets.

Just because Pilestedt does not think it is a good idea doesn’t mean the developers are dismissing the idea or ignoring the complaint. It can be challenging to balance the gameplay of a live-service game and not all ideas are going to make the final cut because the developers can not cater to everything the community demands especially if it clashes with the vision of the game.

It is worth noting that balance is the reason why these changes are being made, not because the developers want the players to struggle or suffer.

It can be annoying to run out of bullets while in a fight but what makes it more harrowing is the slow reload time, which can get players killed in the field. Maybe the developers intended for this specific experience to encourage players to be more cautious and stingy where it counts.
