Despite leaving behind Marvel Studios to take over DCU as the new CEO, James Gunn appears to be keeping up with Marvel releases. Recently, after watching X-Men ’97, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer shared his opinion on the show via Threads and reflected upon how he could use a similar approach but not replicate it, for his DC projects.
Addressing James Gunn’s remarks on X-Men ’97, fans subtly point out how he is learning the right lessons. As the DC CEO called the Marvel show “unique”, netizens felt positive about the fact that Gunn’s realization will make him do the right thing, when it comes to his DC projects. Further, following his previous comments on “superhero fatigue”, his recent remarks on the Marvel show completely debunked the syndrome.
James Gunn Shared His Thoughts on X-Men ’97
Being an integral part of the superhero genre and helmer of projects surrounding Marvel and DC, James Gunn expressed his prevailing interest in Marvel’s latest animated show. Claiming to have watched X-Men ’97, the continuation to the 90s X-Men: The Animated Series, Gunn shared his opinion on threads, after a user asked him if he could do a similar revival for Justice League Unlimited.
Beginning by admiring Beau DeMayo’s works that brought the nostalgia back from the 90s, James Gunn called X-Men ’97 truly “unique”. Further addressing how the uniqueness added a fun element to the show, the DC CEO admitted that while he could use a similar approach, he wouldn’t be interested in trying to replicate its strategy.
“X-Men ‘97 is fun because it’s unique and not desperately trying to follow the trends of everything around it. So I’d rather just keep doing that.”
Claiming that instead of following trends and messing up projects, James Gunn stated that this time onwards he will simply focus on making his films and shows unique.
Gunn’s Remarks Debunked the Superhero Fatigue Syndrome
Previously when superhero fatigue was in surge and most MCU and DC films were failing to survive at the box office, James Gunn had addressed the issue. He was quick to debate, saying “it’s definitely a thing but also not really a thing”. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn had purposefully dismissed the idea of superhero fatigue.
“I think there is such a thing as superhero fatigue. I think it doesn’t have anything to do with superheroes. It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told… It doesn’t have anything to do with whether they’re superhero movies or not. If you don’t have a story at the base of it, just watching things bash each other… it just gets fatiguing, and I think that’s very, very real.”
Therefore, following his previous comments on superhero fatigue, as James Gunn recently noted that he won’t be replicating the strategy of X-Men ’97, fans rejoiced his remarks. Quick to point out how the DC CEO is learning his lesson, fans appear relieved that Gunn understood what was actually going wrong.
There was never any superhero fatigue. Just bullshit fatigue

hes learning the right lesson.dont copy what makes x men good, bc what makes x men good is that it's a unique story with these characters and it stands apart from most modern superhero media. so dont copy it, just do your OWN unique story that stands apart from modern superheroes

Yep James Gunn admitting the key to a great property is not to be a desperate copycat like how the DCEU tried too hard to be an MCU until it lost its own identity and was a confusef mess
So high hopes for DC with Gunn at the helm https://t.co/vvffvAzidR

Subtly stating that there was never any superhero fatigue among audiences, netizens agreed with James Gunn’s previous comments that people were just tired of watching the same beaten-up storyline. Therefore, considering James Gunn’s remarks on X-Men ’97, fans believe that the acclaimed filmmaker debunked the myth about superhero fatigue syndrome.
Stating that it’s better to explore and figure out what might help revive DC, fans on X claimed that James Gunn might finally figure out a way.
