With James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as the studio’s new co-CEOs, the DC Extended Universe is about to undergo a century-long reboot. The DC film franchise is producing a ton of films, but in the process, new actors are assuming iconic roles, reshaping the universe as a whole.
Fans seem to be offended by one recasting decision, though, as many are disappointed that Sasha Calle was not asked to reprise her role as Supergirl. To the dismay of her devoted fan base, the Colombian actress who starred in The Flash is not returning to the role despite giving a compelling performance.
Reactions within the fandom were intense when it was revealed that not Calle but Milly Alcok would be the new Supergirl in the DC Extended Universe.
Fans are outraged and looking for someone to blame. Given that Gunn was in charge of the DCU even at the time of The Flash, which was a DCEU project, many people were pointing the finger at the acclaimed director, who is best known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy. All creative control of DC Studios rests with Gunn now, including casting for movies.
Milly Alcock is James Gunn’s Newest Supergirl in DCU
Sasha Calle’s role as Supergirl in 2023’s The Flash left a long-lasting mark on fans, who were looking forward to her return to the role. Her vibrant energy and riveting performance endeared her to many, which made her the ideal candidate to carry on the legacy of Supergirl. But in Hollywood, things do not always go according to plan.
As previously reported (via CBR), Milly Alcock was one of three people vying to play Supergirl in the DCU. Earlier this week, it was revealed that she had been officially given the role. On the social media platform Threads, James Gunn confirmed the news. Admittedly, Alcock was his first choice for the role, and he talked about how, having seen the actress in the Game of Thrones spinoff series House of the Dragon, he felt she would be a great Supergirl.

Eventually, Alcock will be starring in the DCU-set feature film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is based on the same-titled comic book story (via The Wrap). There is no scheduled release date for the movie, and production is not anticipated to begin anytime soon.
DC Fans Are Miffed About Supergirl’s Recasting
One of the final films in the DCEU after James Gunn’s takeover was The Flash, in which Sasha Calle made her debut as Supergirl. Despite this film’s lackluster reception, most critics hailed the 28-year-old actress as a major highlight, and they yearned for more of her in the part.
However, it appears that Milly Alcock has been chosen to assume the role, so any expectations of Calle resuming her Supergirl role have been shattered. Several DC fans shared their disappointment via X. Here are some responses to Calle’s Supergirl snub:
Milly Alcock is going to be great as Supergirl but WB making Sasha Calle promote The Flash all by herself only to recast her is wild. Hollywood is a brutal business. pic.twitter.com/2zC6KIX4Ec

Very true. I’m fine the recasting, just kind of sucks for her was my only point

This is probably the best Sasha Calle getting snubbed take I’ve seen on Twitter. She carried the interviews cause Ezra was kept in hiding and Keaton didn’t really give a shit lol he just wanted the fat nostalgia bag which I lowkey respect 😂

Hollywood always shows there true colors, one way or another.

Hopefully Gunn gives her a new role in the DCU

Milly Alcock was amazing in House Of Dragons, I’m sure Sasha got paid handsomely for all her work in the flash and she only had signed on for 1 movie contract. Hollywood is brutal, but in this instance I don’t see anything wrong, no one’s owed anything outside of their contract.

Alcock becomes the newest member of an impressive cast of newcomers to the Superman universe, which also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and David Corenswet as Superman.
Also, whether Alcock’s Supergirl will make an appearance in Superman: Legacy, as speculated, has not yet been confirmed. There is always more to a story, even though the news may have crushed the hopes of Calle’s beloved supporters. With Alcock selected to don the Supergirl cape, fans can expect an intriguing new take on the well-known character.
