Margot Robbie is one of the most tremendous influences on the entertainment industry. As brilliant of an actress as she is, the fan-favorite Harley Quinn is equally terrific when it comes to her intelligence as well, considering how she was the mastermind behind her recent blockbuster masterpiece, Barbie.
Not only did she do an exceptionally remarkable job at acting as well as producing the film at the same time, but had it not been for her genius pitch for Barbie to Mattel, the world just might have never gotten the chance to come across the magnificent movie that Barbie was!
How Margot Robbie Made Barbie Happen
Although Barbie was indeed a masterpiece, it also held a lot of risky content that many people could have disagreed with, including those at Mattel. Furthermore, Mattel had never made a movie before, thus, taking this huge risk with their first movie wasn’t something most would have agreed with.
But that’s where Margot Robbie came into the picture as she pitched the very concept and storyline of the movie to Mattel in such a way that they just couldn’t disagree with her. Sharing on a recent episode of Actors on Actors by Variety with Cillian Murphy, the Harley Quinn star said:
“It was a lot of conversations about getting them comfortable with being very, very, very uncomfortable. There are some jokes where they’re just like, ‘Do we have to use the word fascist? Do we need that bit where Mattel employees get shot? Do they have to be shot?’ You know, we’re like, ‘Yeah.'”
Moreover, not only did Robbie perfectly explain to them the entire process and thoughts behind the dialogues written for the characters, but also fought with her excellent way with words to completely convince Mattel to allow them to include all the necessary material in the script, even the risky jokes.
“There were certain jokes, and I was so prepared to fight for certain jokes, and then to explain that, ‘Oh, we have to have that joke because of this and this and this.’ And some of them they’re just like, ‘We’re fine with it.’ And then other jokes I didn’t think they’d have a problem with, you know? But it was never a case of, oh, they didn’t like that so let’s cut it. It was, no, no, no, we need to explain why we think that should be in.”
Just like that, Margot Robbie made sure that the fabulous movie script that was Barbie saw the light of day, and fans just can’t be thankful and appreciative enough to the Suicide Squad star for the same!
