Jerry Seinfeld has been a recognized comedy star since the early ‘90s, but he has some concerns about modern audiences no longer being interested in watching comedies on their televisions just like what they used to do back in the day.
Not only did he blame the advancement of technologies, but he also pointed out how people often police comedy lines and jokes thrown on-air. This simply means that everything they say on screen can either make or break their career due to the rise of cancel culture.
Jerry Seinfeld Airs Frustration Over The Ever-Changing World Of Comedy Shows
In his interview with The New Yorker, actor-comedian Jerry Seinfeld lamented the fall of traditional comedy that viewers enjoy on their small screens. Back in the day, people would relax in the form of tuning into their favorite comedy show.
“Nothing really affects comedy. People always need it. They need it so badly and they don’t get it. It used to be, you would go home at the end of the day, most people would go, ‘Oh, “Cheers” is on. Oh, “MASH” is on. Oh, “Mary Tyler Moore” is on. “All in the Family” is on.’ ”
Now, there aren’t such things anymore, and Seinfeld is blaming the “extreme left and P.C. crap” as well as fans constantly watching what performers do and say on the screen.
“You just expected, ‘There’ll be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight.’ Well, guess what—where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.”
Seinfeld also noted that when comedians come up with ideas, they get filtered by the higher-ups, and in the end, the heart and humor of it are now all gone.
“Now they’re going to see stand-up comics because we are not policed by anyone. The audience polices us. We know when we’re off track. We know instantly and we adjust to it instantly. But when you write a script and it goes into four or five different hands, committees, groups—‘Here’s our thought about this joke.’ Well, that’s the end of your comedy.”
After all that Seinfeld said, fans still roasted him for not being funny anymore. While some acknowledged the changing times and that some jokes won’t be acceptable in this generation, many believed his time has passed and he’s no longer the humorist he thought he was.
