The 2021 adult animated series Invincible has received a lot of critical praise and popularity following its premier on Amazon Prime. The show, which tracks a teenager’s transformation into a superhero, has many popular actors voicing key characters including Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J.K Simmons.
The series also saw popular television actor Walton Goggins lend his voice to the character of Cecil Stedman which touched a chord with audiences. While Goggins is a recurring antagonist who is scheduled to be part of the 3rd season as well, the actor drew the line when it came to his involvement in a live-action film adaptation of the series and stated his reasons for it.
Walton Goggins Is Hesitant To Be Part Of A Live-Action Version Of This Animated Series
The Amazon Prime animated series Invincible is based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, who also adapted it for television. The story follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson’s transformative journey to becoming a superhero under the guidance of his father Noah Grayson aka Omni-Man.
The show which saw two successful seasons, has now been renewed for a 3rd season, as per a report in Forbes, following the acclaim it has received from fans and critics across the world. Apart from marquee Hollywood celebrities like Sandra Oh, Steven Yeun and J.K Simmons voicing key characters, veteran star Walton Goggins also plays the important role of Cecil Stedman.
Goggins’ character is the director of the Global Defense Agency, a clandestine film which works for the safety and benefit of superheroes. In the show, he is instrumental in the young teenager officially being inducted as a superhero, but also hides a sinister personality within him.
Now, with plans for a live-action film adaptation of the series reportedly in the works according to ScreenRant, the Justified star addressed the possibility of reprising his role. While it would be a tricky task for Yeun, who voiced the teenager Mark Grayson, to physically look the part in the film, Goggins’ older character would technically not pose problems as makeup could do the trick.
The Fallout star though, did not seem too enthusiastic about the gig. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Goggins expressed his hesitancy to be transformed into an old man for the film, which he didn’t have to do in the animated series by virtue of only lending his voice.
“I don’t know — I think I’ve already played an old man. I don’t think I could do that again.”
While his presence will be surely missed in this potential live-action adaptation, fans will be heartened to know that Goggins will continue to voice his character in season 3 of the animated show.
Walton Goggins On Playing A Dual Role In Fallout
While Walton Goggins has been a recognizable face in movies and television for many years, his role as the gangster Boyd Crowder in Justified has earned him high praise. The White Lotus star will now be seen in the post apocalyptic Amazon Prime drama series Fallout which will premier on April 11th, 2024.
The show is an adaptation of the popular video game which will see Goggins playing a challenging double role of a 200-year-old mutant killer called The Ghoul, and a Western movie star named Cooper Howard.
The Ant-Man and the Wasp actor spoke to Rolling Stone about his future projects and what attracted him specifically to signing on for these roles in Fallout. He addressed the contrasting arcs of both characters and said,
“The Ghoul is very, very different from Cooper Howard. He’s much more reserved. And that was a bit challenging for me to find both of them. Because you don’t really understand one unless you understand the other”.
Goggins also personally identified with these parts as he confessed to being an introvert and an extrovert depending on the situations he faced in real life. This dichotomy allowed him to find key commonalities with his characters that eventually helped bring them to life.
Season 1 and 2 of Invincible can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
