Mad Men is one of the most critically acclaimed drama series of all time. With a rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, on top of capturing a huge, dedicated audience, it managed to impress critics. The series is perfectly accurate to the 1960s and also has some very strong performances from its cast members. Despite all of its success, it was unfortunately unable to outrun one major criticism.

When the show ended in 2015, there was one major issue fans had with its finale; it was far too confusing. Following a cryptic conclusion is nothing new in Hollywood, however, some audience members believed that the show took it a step too far.

While some would expect the cast to side with their fans, Jon Hamm, who played Don Draper, did not opt for that director. During an interview, he revealed that he disagreed with what the fans thought about the ending of the seventh season.

Jon Hamm Found The Mad Men Ending To Be Perfect

Jon Hamm gave a lengthy interview with Emmy TV Legends, where he went into great detail about the hit series, Mad Men. He specifically talked about the ending of the show and how controversial it was. Although fans thought its ambiguity to be a bad thing, the same was not the case for the actor.

“I didn’t think it was confusing at all,” Hamm told, “but I’m glad that it was ambiguous enough for people to have other opinions. Great.”

Hamm believes that the cryptic themes of the final are what make it stand out in front of other works of the time. Rather than spoonfeeding information to fans so that they can get a cut-and-dry end, the creators of the series choose a different approach.

“Most of the stuff that’s on TV and in movies now is so spelled out in a boring way, there’s no room for interpretation. I think the best art is up for interpretation. Two people can look at the same painting and have completely different reactions to it. Which one is right? I don’t know. Whichever one’s right for you.”

They decided to leave a lot of information and the story open to interpretation so that everyone has a unique experience watching the finale. Instead of having one simple ending, every fan has their own idea of how the show ended.

The actor was giving an interview with GQ, where he started to talk about his opinions on the series itself as well as the finale.

“I feel Mad Men was the greatest. A lot of people like the Bob Newhart one. Mary Tyler Moore was okay. I think Mad Men was the greatest final moment of a series I’ve ever seen. So satisfying. So funny.”
