This very role in Green Lantern, which Ryan Reynolds embraced with open arms, almost dimmed the vibrant light of his acting career.

Ryan Gosling’s Smart Move: The Impact of Saying No to Green Lantern

Ryan Gosling does not seem to be interested in doing a superhero flick, even though many Hollywood celebrities are extremely famous because of DC and Marvel. His history of potentially appearing in superhero films dates back to 2011’s Green Lantern. Gosling was considered for the role of Hal Jordan before Ryan Reynolds was formally cast in it (see Screen Rant).

Gosling ultimately avoided possibly ruining his acting career by turning down the chance to portray the legendary DC superhero. Reynolds was cast in the role instead, but he did not have the same good fortune. Regretfully, Green Lantern was not exactly a box office success for the Deadpool actor; Rotten Tomatoes gives the movie a 25% approval rating. According to Box Office Mozo, the movie also made $220 million while having a $200 million production budget.

Not long after being associated with the role, The Notebook star revealed why he has never been a big fan of dressing up as a superhero. Gosling told MTV:

“When you see these big CGI movies, I just think that’s really hard. Those guys are really great actors to convince you that there’s a big monster there that’s not really there.”

Additionally, there have been rumors that Gosling would rather not sign up for franchises that demand stars to commit to multiple films. This seems to be true enough, as he has not yet accepted a multi-movie deal.

Reynolds also got real, discussing the reasons behind the failure of his 2011 film in which he played Hal Jordan (via Variety). In his words:

“Too much time, too much money. … There was just too many people spending too much money and when there was a problem rather than say, ‘Okay, let’s stop spending on special effects and let’s think about character. How do we replace this big spectacle thing – that isn’t working at all – with something that’s character based?’ .. And to their credit, it’s a very old school way of looking at things. It’s just ‘Let’s just keep spending our way through this.’ And that was – it didn’t work.”

Gosling’s decision to turn down the role proved wise, as he went on to star in critically acclaimed films like La La Land and Blade Runner 2049. Meanwhile, in a recent teaser of Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds’ character can be seen wearing a shirt featuring Gosling, and the Canadian actor has the perfect response to it.

Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson is seen reading a book in Shawn Levy’s upcoming flick Deadpool & Wolverine while sporting a Ryan Gosling t-shirt. As one might assume, that is obviously not the Canadian star’s physical appearance.

However, there is one thing Gosling really wants Reynolds to know. The former recently responded to the news that Reynolds was sporting a shirt with his face (via ET):

“I mean, I just want my shirt back. He borrowed that shirt from me and I need it back.”

While he awaits Reynolds, 47, returning his shirt, Gosling is busy promoting his upcoming flick, The Fall Guy. Helmed by David Leitch and starring Emily Blunt, it will hit theaters on May 3.

In hindsight, it’s clear that Gosling dodged a bullet by passing on the role, which almost deteriorated Reynolds’ career.

Green Lantern can be rented on the Apple TV. Also, Deadpool & Wolverine will be released on July 26, 2024; mark the date!
