Patty Jenkins has been heavily working on Rogue Squadron, stepping away from the DC Universe and into the world of Star Wars. With the Oscars rolling in with a bang, the awards were all given to well-deserving candidates. From Brendan Fraser winning the Oscar for Best Actor to Michelle Yeoh taking the award home for Best Actress. History was made during the ceremony.

However, not everyone was happy during the ceremony let alone while leaving it. The Wonder Woman director pointed out something that did not sit well with her during the Academy Awards and Chloé Zhao fully supports her in her stance. Her focus was not on who won and who didn’t, but on who was nominated and who wasn’t.

Patty Jenkins Is Unhappy With The Oscars Not Nominating Any Women Directors

The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards in the category for Best Director had all been men. That did not sit well with Patty Jenkins. She even pointed out how uneasy that made her, seeing that no matter how much the Hollywood industry will talk about equality and diversity, an imbalance will be there for a long time.

Patty Jenkins

“I say that even with all of their push to have diversity. The numbers are just hugely imbalanced of who votes for these things. I sort of just stopped paying attention to it. It’s still going to take a long ways to go. It’s going to take a lot more to really see truly more diverse awards. I really appreciate the efforts that they’re making but we have a long way to go.”

The director confirmed that although the efforts and initiatives are visible, they somehow manage to slip and miss. Jenkins directly said that she gives up on expecting any step towards diversity and inclusivity because no nominee for Best Director was a woman.

Chloé Zhao Has Similar Views To Patty Jenkins

Chloé Zhao won the Oscar for Best Director for her movie Nomadland back in 2021. It increasingly changed the hype that fans had for her then-upcoming movie Eternals. The director talked about something similar to Patty Jenkins and the lack of diversity even in modern cinema.

“We’re not doing it for awards, but that does help for the longevity of careers.”

Her focus was also on the imbalance within the Hollywood industry. However, she clarified that it is not that big a race for awards as it is a boost for their careers. Zhao also mentioned that gender diversity, as much as it may be talked about, is not implemented.

The nominees for Best Director for the 95th Academy Awards were Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans, Todd Field for Tár, and Ruben Östlund for Triangle of Sadness.
