While Sydney Sweeney’s recent collaboration with Sony has been up to a rough start at the Box-office, unlike Madame Web, things have been smooth for her previous Sony release. Even though mainstream rom-com releases are a rarity these days, with Hollywood prioritizing IP-driven releases in recent years, Anyone but You was a breath of fresh air for fans.
Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing, starring Glen Powell and Sweeney, the film has become a sleeper hit for Sony, and the chances of a sequel appear bright.
Things Are Looking Good for a Sequel to Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone but You
Despite having a slow start after debuting during Christmas, the rom-com witnessed a massive upsurge in its box-office return, especially after being re-released on Valentine’s weekend. And with the movie’s total standing at $172.3 million on a budget of $25 million, it’s reasonable to assume a sequel will be likely. While any official announcement on the state of a potential sequel is yet to be made, Sydney Sweeney recently broke her silence on the subject, stating she is in talks with Powell about further opportunities. Speaking with E!, she said:
“I can’t actually reveal all of my secrets. But Glen and I—I mean I was talking to him this morning. We’re talking about stuff. You never know, you’ll have to wait and see.”
More importantly, in the post’s comment section, Glen Powell commented with a mouth-shut emoji, further fueling the possibility of a sequel in the foreseeable future.
Sydney Sweeney Debunked Dating Rumors With Glen Powell
Apart from being a big success for Sony, the rom-com’s big-screen release was a throwback to the early 2000s, when rom-coms starring major actors were the recipe for success. But it wasn’t only the movie that reminded fans of the early 2000s, as many speculated that, like Pitt and Jolie, who began dating during Mr. & Mrs. Smith, similar might’ve been the case for Powell and Sweeney. And while Powell’s break-up with Gigi Paris and the flirtatious interviews of him and the Euphoria Star together only added fuel to the rumors, Sydney Sweeney did eventually debunk these speculations.
The Madame Web Star clarified that there was no truth to the dating rumors as she opened up about her long-time relationship with producer Jonathan Davino, which she kept fairly private. She told Glamour:
“Everyone is always so curious about who I’m with and what’s that like, but I think it’s important to have something for me… I’ve been in a steady relationship for a really long time, which is not normal in this industry and not normal for my age. What I’ve noticed about the idea of celebrity is people really love to build someone up, and then tear them down.”
Although the ending of Anyone but You didn’t leave any loose ends to make room for a sequel, considering this hasn’t stopped Hollywood before, a sequel after its huge success is not far-fetched.
Anyone but You is currently running at theatres.
