The Henry Cavill starrer Matthew Vaughn-directed film Argylle was supposed to be a blockbuster. Released just mere hours ago on Apple TV+, the movie, which was already in the making even before its source novella was released, has turned out to be a major disappointment.

While loyal fans of Cavill have been busy appreciating the film, many of them have also been wondering if he would be willing to return for a potential second and third part, for Argylle was originally revealed to be the first of three films. And in a recent interview, Cavill revealed the one condition that would make him return,

Henry Cavill is one of the leading superstars of the film industry currently. Making his first appearance on the big screen following his exit from The Witcher series and firing from his fan-favorite DC role of Superman the actor was recently seen in Argylle.

The Matthew Vaughn-directed film first gained traction for being adapted before its source novel of the same name was released and Apple Studios reportedly purchased its adaptation rights for a whopping $200 million. Slated to be the first film of at least a 3-film franchise, the film has not been fairing well when it comes to critical reviews (see CBR, The Guardian, Vulture, and NYTimes).

Furthermore, Sam Rockwell and Henry Cavill, its leading men, have not yet signed up for more films. While talking to Variety, Rockwell along with his co-star stated the reason behind their single film contract,

“I guess we just want to see how it does, all depends on whether the audience likes what we’ve done.”

While the audience may have somewhat liked the film seeing the 3.5 star ratings on Google, Cavill stated that they’d both be interested if asked for another film.

“If Matthew comes calling, I’d certainly say yes.”

In another interview with Polygon, Cavill had displayed similar sentiments, stating that if he is recasted he won’t be the one at fault anyhow for his departure won’t be voluntary.

Even though it certainly is good news for the many fans of the book and the actor, it seems unlikely that a potential Argylle 2 will be released anytime soon. As Variety reports the actor is slated to helm several upcoming major projects including a Highlander reboot and Warhammer 40,000 adaptation.

When Will Argylle 2 Happen?

A still from the film

While Sam Rockwell and Henry Cavill seem to have given their consent for a potential Argylle sequel, fans now have been left wondering whether Argylle 2 will take place and if it does take place, when will it happen. Furthermore, the mysterious post-credit scene of the film has further left the viewers confused by displaying the text — Argylle: Book One — The Movie — Coming Soon.

In a recent interview with Polygon, director Matthew Vaughn cleared the air of mystery and revealed that if Apple greenlights the project (which they haven’t yet) the plan is to adapt the in-universe Argylle book plot instead of the current metafictional take. He stated,

“That would be nice, but that’s up to the audience, it’s not up to us. The plan — touch wood, touch wood — would be Book One, which is written and selling. The book didn’t write itself, you know. […] It’s a really good book. So [after] Book One, then we would definitely do Argylle 2 the movie, which continues with the characters and the meta craziness.”

Although seeing the busy schedule of its lead Cavill, the film may take some time around. But the potential development idea of the film seems interesting enough and a way out for Vaughn to prove that he has not yet hit rock bottom as many fans on the internet have been claiming.

Argylle is in cinemas now.
