Actress Rose McGowan most famously starred in Jason Momoa’s 2011 film Conan the Barbarian. The actress has been an influential figure in raising awareness of harassment in the workplace and sexism in Hollywood. She has been one of the pillars of the rise of the MeToo movement and the eventual fall of disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein. She has also detailed her horrible experiences and the unsurmountable amount of sexism that has prevailed in  Hollywood through her memoir Brave and her documentary series Citizen Rose.

Since 2017’s The Sound, she has turned her focus more on her music career. But her voice and its impact that has led to the change in the industry and its treatment of women had been resounding. She is an inspiring figure in the industry for all the young and rising actresses in keeping their best foot forward, having their voices heard, and standing up for themselves amidst a predominantly testosterone-filled industry.

Rose McGowan had many struggles and setbacks in her career, mainly due to the sexist film industry that wouldn’t give her opportunities as they didn’t like the way she looked. Those in power including film producers, directors, and studio heads would employ voyeuristic angles to how they want actresses to be for them to appear in their films. In an excerpt from her memoir Brave, McGowan wrote,(via i-D)

I was literally told I had to have long hair otherwise the men doing the hiring in Hollywood wouldn’t want to f**k me and if they didn’t want to f**k me, they wouldn’t hire me. I was told this by my female agent, which is tragic on many levels. So, so evil and so, so sad. Evil because I took the information from an older woman who was the mouthpiece for what Hollywood wants, and she was right. Sad because it wasn’t just the message that gets filtered down to women and girls, I got the direct message.”

This is indeed a sad reality for actresses at the time who had to undergo such abuse and mistreatment in their efforts to become successful in Hollywood. It is such a breath of fresh air that things have begun to change and women have become far more prominent and respected in the industry than ever before.

Rose McGowan has appeared in big films such as the Jason Momoa-led Conan the Barbarian. She has not appeared in a proper full-length feature film since 2017’s The Sound. But now, it seems she’s developed an interest to make a comeback to the movies. While appearing on the Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing I Did Podcast, she revealed that she misses acting and is planning for a comeback with an animated film. She said,

“I started recently missing performing. I’ve kind of become a bit nostalgic for it. I wrote a 30-page treatment and they commissioned a screenplay. It’s about mutts versus purebreds in the kingdom of Pomerania, who will go to any length to see their breed rule all.”

It’ll be refreshing to see McGowan return to acting as it’s been quite a while since fans and audiences have seen her in a film. With her new animated film in development, everything seems to be falling into place and fans might see her return very soon.
