Back in 2021, Gina Carano was embroiled in a controversy over her socio-political comments about the state of being a Republican in today’s day and age and comparing it to Jews during the Holocaust. She was fired from Disney and Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian (via The Hollywood Reporter). Despite being hurt by this action, Carano was firm about her statements and the importance of free speech.

She surprisingly expressed her happiness at finally being canceled in an interview with Post Millennial. Carano also claimed that while she is not a perfect person by any stretch, she is honest about her views and is vocal about what is right and the things happening around her. She is also happy to find fans who continue to support her and share the same socio-political opinions. She said,

“I would have been canceled anyways, 10 times from when I was canceled, so I’m actually happy it happened because my heart is free. I’m not hiding. I’m honest, I’m out here. And I’m a very flawed human being. I don’t have everything figured out. But I know one thing is I’m attracting people that I absolutely like— I’m finding a tribe,”

The actress is currently suing Disney for discrimination and wrongful termination over the matter, with enormous support from Elon Musk. It remains to be seen what comes of this lawsuit and whether both parties end up in court.

In her post on Instagram, the actress thanked Jon Favreau for pairing her up with Weathers who passed on numerous words of wisdom and acting advice. She called him a mentor and someone who cared about her when others backed away. She wrote,

“….I wasn’t in an emotional state where I could pick up the phone because of how upset I was, but we did end up speaking later on. He was gentle, and encouraging and didn’t want me to give up, he was letting me know that he wasn’t throwing me away, he was trying to keep my hope alive in what seemed like quite hopeless scenario, he showed me he cared. That is who he was.

“I bonded with him very closely on Mando season 1&2. Jon Favreau felt he would be a good mentor for me because we shared the athlete turned actor bond, so John had him direct my first episode in season 2 of Mando. I believe had we gotten to Rangers of the New Republic, Carl would’ve directed me in much more. Jon F. was right, we were a great fit.

“Carl was a mentor to me on set, he would put both his arms on my shoulders and look me directly in the eyes to calm my spirit. He had a wonderful perspective of telling a story that can only come through his experience and wisdom that he shared with me to help make me shine. I cherish those moments.”

Many other cast members and filmmakers have also released statements about Weathers’ passing including Pedro Pascal, Favreau, and Giancarlo Esposito among others. Fans can watch Carano as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian on Disney+.
