But Akutami is no newbie to controversial panels and one such example is the highly debated Malaysia Scene in Jujutsu Kaisen. The events disturbed fans so much that Mei Mei was instantly disliked by fans despite their earlier consideration of her.

In chapter 133 of Jujutsu Kaisen, during the Shibuya Incident Arc, it is shown that Mei Mei has left the country to be in a lush Malaysian hotel with her brother Ui Ui. This scene comes just a few chapters after Nanami’s death scene, and as you know, Nanami had always dreamt of settling down by the Malaysian beach.

The scene was horrifying to fans, not because of the blatant ridicule of Nanami’s goal, but because of the way Mei Mei was trying to seduce her 13-year-old brother. Ui Ui’s positive response to her approach also means that this is a common occurrence. Fans have voiced out the fact that Mei Mei seems like a groomer as well as an abuser. The fact that Ui Ui is ready to give up his life for her and worships the very ground she stands on does not help Mei Mei’s case.

The incestual scene disgusted Jujutsu Kaisen fans, and many demanded the author’s reasoning behind the scene. Nonetheless, Mei Mei lost most of her popularity after this chapter.

Gege Akutami Created a Stark Contrast Between Nanami and Mei Mei

Nanami and Mei Mei are polar opposites and no other scene could explore it more than the one in Malaysia. A fan theory explains that Mei Mei acts as a foil to Nanami’s character. In fact, both characters are used to show the dark reality of the Jujutsu society where the good ones are the first to die.

Nanami used to be a salaryman, yet he left his previous job to do something worthwhile with his skills. He felt appreciation through the people who he helped. Nanami strived to protect the weak and innocent. Mei Mei, on the other hand, uses her own innocent brother as a shield and is fine with his death as long as she is alive. She brings a child to combat, whereas Nanami does not want Yuji to lose his youth in the Jujutsu world.

Nanami dreamt of living a humble life in Malaysia, but he failed to achieve his dream of living a peaceful hassle-free life. Mei Mei immediately flees to Malaysia and lives in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur in a luxurious hotel. Once again, this highlights how the undeserving are always happy and fulfilled.

The suggestion that Mei Mei and Ui Ui could have an incestual relationship is the last straw because she has undone every ideal that Nanami has strived for. She might have stolen the innocence of a young person, the very thing that Nanami always wanted to prevent.

The worst part of all is the fact that while a selfish person like Mei Mei is alive and well, Nanami is killed in battle. Mei Mei, the epitome of corruption, prospers unjustly while Nanami dies an undeserving death, which further reflects the twisted nature of Jujutsu Kaisen as well as real life.
