The Robert Kirkman-created show has gained acclaim over the course of its run for its witty storytelling and subversive parodying, and the second season is taking things up a notch. In the recently released episode, audiences see two characters, Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae, meet their demise. This has led several viewers to wonder whether their fate is sealed and if this is it.

If we flip through the pages of the comic series, one between the two seems to have been dealt the shorter end of the stick.

With Episode 5 kicking off Invincible Season 2’s second part, the Mark and the Guardians of the Globe face a new threat in the form of Sequids—a race of destructive, parasitic aliens headed straight to Earth. As some heroes assemble in a strike force and take off to space to deal with the dangerous species, Rex Splode, Dupli-Kate, and Shrinking Rae stay back to hold the fort for other Earth-related risks.

We see Rex joke about ‘chilling out’ while the rest come back and that it’s unlikely for two back-to-back ‘world-shattering emergencies’ to happen simultaneously. Of course, his deductions are proven wrong when they’re required to confront the Lizard League—commanded by King Lizard—who’ve broken into a nuclear facility.

In the following sequences, we see a grotesque showdown between the trio and the lizard-themed supervillains, leaving Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae’s fate obscured.

Having the capacity to replicate herself, we see the murder of each Dupli-Kate clone sequentially.

With Komodo Dragon’s strength overpowering the original hero and not allowing her enough time to create copies of herself, it seems as though she’s about to meet her demise when struggling under the villain’s death-grip. Her last-ditch effort to produce one more clone (which she successfully does) is met with Komodo’s instantaneous grasp, as the two get smashed together, leaving only a mush of blood, bones, and organs behind.

Therefore, at the surface level, this scene screams character death on all fronts. However, in the comics, that isn’t the case.

In the source material, Dupli-Kate actually stays alive! Here, a funeral was thrown after her ‘death,’ which left The Immortal in great anguish. He headed north to live a life of solitude. As Multi-Paul, Kate’s brother, gets featured in later chapters to avenge her death, it is later revealed that the Dupli-Kate that ‘died’ wasn’t the original.

Readers soon discovered that Kate had always lived through a clone to ensure she didn’t leave herself exposed, as she once got entangled in a near-death experience.

This cautionary step allowed her to keep her original self secure.

While this happens in the comics, we are left to see if the show follows a similar route.

Is Shrinking Rae Dead In Invincible Season 2 Episode 5?

The one to defeat Shrinking Rae is none other than Komodo Dragon, and the superhero meets an end that’s repulsive, to put it mildly. As she defeats one member of the Lizard League and leaps at Komodo, the larger supervillain grabs the character in her shrunken stature and… eats her. A line from Rex suggests this could be a silver lining, as Rae ‘doesn’t stay small.’

Unfortunately, her efforts to grow to her usual size and break out of Komodo’s body don’t work. The villain’s build proves too sturdy and toughened. Rae dies struggling inside. One can assume she’s dead from the blood-squelching and bone-breaking noises that play out.

Fans of the character may be up for some disappointment as Rae never returns in the comics. The male counterpart dies pretty much the same way. However, many have speculated that with the depth and nuance the gender-swapped was offered in the series, there could be ways to bring her back. Whether the team behind the show decides to do that remains unclear.

At this point in the show, however, casual viewers will be under a split impression, with some taking both deaths as concrete and some wondering if they’ll be resurrected. Only those who fall back on the comics will know that Dupli-Kate is the one who survived.

It’ll be intriguing to see how the show tackles the aftermath of these developments.
