In Matarazzo’s view, the show’s creators and Netflix itself might have erred on the side of caution, opting for a safer narrative direction. His suggestion implied that a darker and more violent tone could have added layers of complexity to the storyline, potentially enhancing the viewing experience for audiences.
Despite Stranger Things‘ undeniable success, Matarazzo’s suggestion raises intriguing questions about the creative choices behind the series.

Matarazzo conveyed his belief that the show could have ventured into the more daring territory by raising the body count, suggesting that Netflix had played it safe with the series’ storytelling. Gaten Matarazzo told (via CBR),

“It might sound messed up but we should kill more people,” Matarazzo said. “This show would be so much better if the stakes were much higher, like at any moment any of these kids can kick it. I feel like we’re all too safe.”

This perspective aligns with the sentiments expressed by other core cast members. In 2022, after the fourth season premiered, both Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp speculated that a main character might die by the series’ end.

Noah Schnapp told The Wrap,

“They need to kill off some people, it’s so big. They just need to have one massacre scene where half the cast dies.”

Millie Bobby Brown, who portrayed the lead role of Eleven in Netflix’s sci-fi drama, echoed Schnapp’s sentiments. Speaking with The Wrap, Bobby Brown stated,

“It’s way too big. Last night, we couldn’t even take one group picture because there was like 50 of us. I was like, ‘You need to start killing people off’.”

As Stranger Things gears up for its fifth and final season, slated for release sometime in 2025, the production faced delays due to strikes from both WGA and SAG-AFTRA the previous year. Despite these setbacks, anticipation remains high for the culmination of this beloved series.
