The hit series Glee has turned many of its actors into stars. The show was created by American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and Brad Falchuk. The music of the show started many trends on social media and the show had a huge fandom. The hit series also won several awards, including Primetime Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, and the Grammys.
However, the show proved to be a bane for lead actor Matthew Morrison. The actor played the role of Wil Schuester, the Spanish teacher who is tasked with reforming the Glee Club in the TV show. Morrison revealed that the extensive schedule of the show may have led to him developing psoriasis and that he was in extreme pain due to the condition.
Matthew Morrison Had His Breakthrough With Glee
Actor Matthew Morrison became a national phenomenon as the lead actor of Glee. He was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance as Will Schuester in the musical show. The actor also had a distinguished stage career on Broadway and had a solo musical career.
Morrison first gained prominence when he was featured as a member of the fake boy band ‘Fresh Stop’, which was first created for the Late Show with David Letterman. The actor then appeared in the Broadway adaptation of Footloose. The actor was also recruited for the boy band ‘LMNT’, which Morrison described as the worst year of his life.
The actor mentioned that he stayed in the group for a year before leaving it as the group finally recorded their only album All Sides. He spoke to Pop Eater,
“Unfortunately [I was in LMNT]. I experienced what you shouldn’t do. It was the worst year of my life. You know when you’re a performer and you’re out there on stage and you’re embarrassed that you’re doing something wrong? It was pretty bad.”
Matthew Morrison then finally got his breakthrough with the show Glee. Morrison played the lead role in the show and was subjected to harsh criticism throughout. He was nominated for an Emmy in 2010 for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor. He was also nominated for the Golden Globes twice.
Matthew Morrison Developed Psoriasis When He Was Filming For Glee
The show Glee had a huge fan following upon its release and had a lot of eyes on it. The musical drama was reportedly one of the most tweeted-about shows at the beginning of its run. The show also won several awards, including the Emmys and the Golden Globes. The show was credited with having a social impact as well, due to its exploration of diverse characters.
However, lead actor Matthew Morrison mentioned that the show was extremely stressful for him. He revealed in the And That’s What You Really Missed podcast that he had to balance filming the show, promoting it, and working on stage. He said that the resulting stress caused psoriasis for him. He said,
“I was so stressed, I broke into the craziest psoriasis…“I think it was just everything building up and, for me, that was just the physical manifestation of what I was feeling inside. The psoriasis was everywhere on my body but my face was okay. But then it slowly started coming to my ears and eyelids.”
Morrison mentioned that the production of Glee and the response to his character affected him a lot. He also mentioned how the team at Glee would cover his psoriasis with makeup and it would hurt to take off the makeup at the end of the day. He said,
“In a nutshell, I loved the experience and I appreciated it for what it was, but it was really challenging and it was hard to put our bodies through 16 hours a day and then all the other stuff we had to do on top of it…And not, like, ‘woe is me, because it was an amazing opportunity, but we were all there, it was like a war.”
One of the causes of the condition has been speculated to be a response to emotional stress. According to the Cleveland Clinic, psoriasis is characterized by itchy skin, dry skin, joint, and knee pain.
