Amazon Prime’s Fallout television series is fast approaching, and director Jonathan Nolan teased fans with an unexpected twist from the show that some might find quite upsetting. Despite the looming reaction, Nolan will not try to appease the viewers but will focus on the essence of the series.
The filmmaker previously revealed the need to capture the amalgamation of violent and dark but still funny and satirical themes amid the post-apocalyptic lore. How exactly this was done is yet to be seen once the show airs in a few days.
Fallout Director Reveals Comedy Will Be An Integral Part Of The Series
Jonathan Nolan spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and shared how the comedy is a vital part of the story and not just a filler. The script, no matter how serious the plot is, must be flexible enough to accommodate the funny scenes.
“It’s also the closest I’ve come to working with comedy in my career. We’re usually a word-perfect production — you have the script, it’s been worked on meticulously, let’s shoot what’s on the page. With comedy, you have to be more flexible. You have to embrace the chaos a little bit.”
The director wanted to make a statement regarding the post-apocalyptic genre in shows – it’s not always a sad ending, but it could also be an introduction to a new era.
“We’re in a moment right now, where things are so f—king dire in the world, that to have a show that doubles down on that would be a little scary. One of the things about ‘Fallout’, it’s not the end of the world, it’s about all these beginnings for a new world.”
He further shared a few details about his approach to filming Fallout. He claimed he did not want to make it feel dour or severely gloomy in nature.
“The sense of humor and irony [in ‘Fallout 3’] and the cutting level of satire and this depiction of an Eisenhower-era America that never lost its swagger that kept lumbering forward. It just had a unique tone.”
While this sounds new for many fans, some would probably raise an eyebrow with the added touch of comedy.
Jonathan Nolan Has No Plans To Please Everyone
In another conversation with Collider, Nolan said he took the series as an opportunity to introduce it to new fans as not the typical post-apocalyptic show with only depressing scenes.
“This is an opportunity for us to work on a show that gets to look that in the eye. We get to talk about the end of the world, but do it with a sense of humor. There’s a thread of optimism woven into the show, as well.”
Nolan also mentioned in the same interview that while he cannot please the viewers and fans of the games, he can only try to make something that he hopes others would appreciate. He claimed that it was a fool’s errand to try and satisfy everyone, but he was indeed happy with the outcome of the show.
Fallout will be available to stream on Prime Video on April 11.
