The much-awaited screen adaptation of the video game series Fallout is fast approaching, and Walton Goggins looked hauntingly fantastic in his bounty hunter ensemble sans the nose. The actor is almost unrecognizable in the trailer, all thanks to his makeup team who spent five hours working on his disguise.

The Prime Video series will be helmed by Jonathan Nolan and will also feature Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Kyle MacLachlan, among others.

Walton Goggins Revealed The Inspiration Behind The Ghoul’s Look

During his guesting at Late Night with Seth Meyers, actor Walton Goggins described his dramatic transformation for his role as The Ghoul in Fallout. He revealed taking inspiration from Blade star Kris Kristofferson’s character, Abraham Whistler.

We wanted him to be attractive, you know, we wanted the audience to kind of lean into his look and not be kind of repulsed by it. And so I said, could you do Kris Kristofferson if he were 250 years old and had been walking the wasteland, and had been drinking all night?

The grueling prosthetics and makeup transformation, which took five hours in the chair, gave Goggins the look that complement the post-apocalyptic world of the series. Interestingly, the actor was keen on collaborating with Jonathan Nolan that he agreed to the project even without knowing what it is about.

We were like two minutes into the Zoom call I was having with Jonathan Nolan, and I said, I’m in. He said, don’t you want to read a script? I said, sure, whatever. He said, well do you want to know who you’re playing, what the character is? I said yeah, okay, go ahead, tell me.”

Baffled and surprised, Goggins eventually went on to ask for the script probably out of curiosity.

And he said, he’s 200 years old, he’s a bounty hunter that has been roaming a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and he has no nose. And I said, you know what? Could you send those scripts?

Goggins’ original undamaged face will also be shown in the earlier parts of the series. The actor confessed he had a bit of an input into the character’s look which definitely fit the theme. With Blade’s Kris Kristofferson as the inspiration, certainly nothing could go wrong.

In his interview with IGN, Goggins shared how he prepared for the role of Cooper Howard aka The Ghoul. He admitted staying away from the video games.

I would watch a movie every day. I’d seen a lot of these movies. But when I go to work, I like to kind of stay in that head and there’s a lot to kind of answer for who The Ghoul is now and this man Cooper Howard.”

He further added that he studied the character’s backstory and incorporated it into his portrayal.

The Ghoul is a rascal, and I like being a rascal. His timing is impeccable. His worldview is predicated on the things that he’s seen for 200 years. So there is nothing naive about him. And that’s really kind of where I started it from. It wasn’t with the game.”

Fallout will be released on Prime Video on April 12, 2024.
