Invincible‘s Live-Action Movie Development Slowed by Industry Issues
The live-action Invincible movie, first announced in 2017 with Robert Kirkman, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg at the helm as executive producers, has hit a snag. In a recent interview with IGN, Kirkman revealed the project is stuck in development slow lane.
The delay is due to several factors, including industry strikes and the need to align the film with the animated series without overshadowing it. Kirkman stated the importance of getting it right, ensuring it’s a unique yet complementary experience for fans. The showrunner said:
“We’re just now getting back into that. It’s something that we definitely want to get right. Now that the show is out, and the animated series is doing well, we’re trying to figure out ways to make sure that it stands apart, [and] works in tandem with the show to show how cool Invincible is, and doesn’t detract from it in any way.”
To the frustration of viewers who craved a binge-watch, Amazon opted to split Invincible‘s second season in two, releasing the first four episodes in November 2023. Amazon left fans with a cliffhanger for months until the remaining four arrived weekly in March 2024.
Similarly, the delay in the live-action movie’s development is also seen as a situation where fans have to wait longer than they would like.
Despite the disappointing update about the live-action movie, the 45-year-old assured fans that the final stretch of season 2 is packed with excitement. He promises new characters and a cliffhanger ending that will leave viewers eager for season 3.
Season 3 is already in production, and voice recording is finished. This is good news for fans who had to wait two years between seasons 1 and 2.
Animated Success of Invincible Breeds Live-Action Challenges
While the show’s popularity created excitement for the movie, it also raises the bar for quality. Robert Kirkman stressed the importance of the movie standing on its own merits while existing within the same universe as the animated show.
Steven Yeun, who voices Invincible, might want to play the character in live-action, but he thinks he might be too old for the role. J.K. Simmons, who voices Omni-Man, also has doubts about returning for the live-action version. However, both actors remain open to involvement in the project in different capacities.
While fans wait for the Invincible live-action movie, they can look forward to the final episodes of Season 2 and the quicker turnaround for Season 3. The movie’s slow development shows they want to make something good that fits with the animated series.
