DC Studios co-boss, James Gunn, is currently developing the franchise’s new projects of the Gods and Monsters phase. But, before handling his CEO responsibilities for DC, he directed MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Given his experience working in both entertainment franchises, he once shared how Avengers: Infinity War destroyed the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond despair.
Comparing it with his projects, he shared that Marvel might face trouble in coming up with good stories that would exceed what the blip event created referencing its deep impact. As it would be not easy to forget, the new Deadpool 3 might be their new hope.
James Gunn Talked About How Avengers: Infinity War Affected MCU
The Suicide Squad director emphasized how Thanos’ blip in Avengers: Infinity War is a major event that left a devastating scar on the MCU. In the 2018 movie, the Mad Titan erased half of the universe’s population through the power of the Infinity Stones.
However, it was Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man who saved the world by wiping out Thanos and his army in its sequel, Avengers: Endgame. Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk used the gauntlet to restore the population that the former erased.
This whole blip event was a dramatic turn that made things difficult for Marvel to come up with new stories to top it. That was what James Gunn conveyed in the interview via Deadline. He shared,
“There’s this worldwide, universe-wide event that happened. And in truth, everybody would be stark raving mad at this point. So it’s hard to write stories in the wake of that. Which is why the Guardians movies have been easier, because they’re set outside of that a little bit.”
While what he stated at the time makes great sense given that fans have witnessed a major difference in MCU stories post-Endgame era. However, this trajectory can be altered given that the studio is bringing one of the most beloved anti-hero characters, Deadpool back on-screen.
Deadpool 3 is Bringing Back Deadpool and Wolverine
Even though the blip has left a permanent impact on the MCU, bringing some new stories would probably take much effort if the events are happening after the Endgame era. As the phase continues to grow, Deadpool 3, which is officially titled, Deadpool & Wolverine might salvage the issue.
With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman taking the lead as the titular characters, the movie has dropped a major plot hint through the teaser released during Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday. The teaser involves Time Variance Authority (TVA) from the Loki series with Wade Wilson given a chance to “be a hero among heroes” as footage from across the MCU is displayed on screens.
While the plot still remains cryptic, it looks like Deadpool will seemingly be visiting different timelines which could include juggling between key MCU moments. This would mean that the upcoming project could be a major game changer in MCU but how, that remains an intriguing question until its release. With many twists still in the bag, Deadpool & Wolverine is arriving on July 26 this year. Meanwhile, one can stream Avengers: Infinity War on Disney+.
