Carrey will again reprise his role, despite his earlier decision to step away in 2022. The comedian told Access during press for Sonic‘s second installment:

“It depends if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink and it says to me that it’s gonna be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break.”

After Carrey’s remarks, Sonic producers Toby Ascher and Neal H Mortiz told IGN in 2022 that they wouldn’t consider recasting the role. Ascher explained:

“Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he’ll always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he’d like to be around. We love Jim and he’s so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible. We would love him as long as he’d like to be there with us.”

The 62-year-old is coming back for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, indicating that he finds the script for the third installment compelling in some way.
