Johnny Depp has had an illustrious career over the years with many successful films and iconic roles. His collaboration with Tim Burton has churned out some of his most well-known works, including Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
He has become synonymous with the character Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. His daughter Lily-Rose Depp is also becoming a promising young actress in her own right with her acting career. However, one film in which they both starred, turned out to be a total disaster critically and commercially.
Johnny Depp and Lily-Rose Depp’s Yoga Hosers Was a Total Misfire
Johnny Depp and his daughter Lily-Rose Depp starred together in 2016’s Yoga Hosers. The film was directed by Kevin Smith, whose daughter Harley Quinn Smith also played the co-lead in the film. The film was the sequel to Smith’s 2014 film Tusk and showed the two girls battling Nazi clones (made from bratwurst) called Bratzis to clear their name of a murder they didn’t commit.
Depp played Guy LaPointe, a legendary man-hunter who helps the girls prove their innocence. The film looked promising at first as director Smith was a prolific filmmaker with memorable films like Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and others. The fact that both Smith and Depp were working with their daughters was an interesting aspect of the film. The film also had Depp’s son Jack Depp.
However, when the film was released, it was panned by both critics and fans. The film became one of the worst-rated films and a career low for both Smith and Depp. With a budget of $5 million, the film managed to earn only $38,767 (via The Numbers), becoming the lowest-grossing film in their respective careers. Fans can watch/rent the film on Apple TV+.
Tim Burton Details His Unique Connection With Johnny Depp
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have collaborated over 8 times and have produced some of the most acclaimed films in their respective careers. Films like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Alice in Wonderland are highlights of their hit collaborative ventures.
Burton talked to Deadline about his special bond with Depp, which formed when they first met on the sets of Edward Scissorhands. Burton revealed that he loved Depp’s openness to play various characters and commit to the art of acting and not doing it for commercial gain. He is in awe of his desire to transform himself for every role he plays and his experimentative approach to films. He said,
“I first met him when I did Edward Scissorhands. He was a bit similar to me, kind of suburban, white trash, whatever – we connected on some kind of level,” said Burton of how the two first met for his hit film Edward Scissorhands. It wasn’t even a verbal understanding, it was just somebody I could feel liked to do characters, who was interested in acting for the art of it and not so much for the business of it.
He was somebody who would play Scissorhands or Edward [in Edward Wood] and all these different things. That’s always exciting to see someone play different things rather than being one thing from one film to another and his transformation from film to film has always excited me”
Their last collaboration was 2012’s Dark Shadows, which unfortunately proved to be their most underwhelming feature. Burton is now gearing up for the release of Beetlejuice 2, and Depp is coming up with his second directorial effort titled Modi, based on the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
