The fiction world has endless possibilities, though director Michael Dougherty previously teased this information in a viral tweet.

Mothra Returns In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Back in 2019, Michael Dougherty wrote a Twitter post about Mothra’s return to the franchise. Mothra gave up her life to help Godzilla fight the three-headed dragon, Ghidorah, but the ending of the film showed an egg had been discovered in the Yuccan province.

Mothra never really dies. She represents the eternal cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth. And she knows it.”

With this, the latest trailer of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire teased the comeback of the gigantic moth, prompting more intense fight scenes and an intriguing storyline in the upcoming movie.

In his interview with Screen Rant, Dougherty described Mothra as someone equal to Godzilla. Her appearance in the film definitely indicates that she will be involved in some way in the final epic battle to defeat the Skar King and his minions.

I think in the same way that Godzilla’s theme is so intertwined with his iconic status, Mothra has certain traits that are crucial to her as well. She’s so much more than just a giant moth. Any true Godzilla fan knows that.”

Mothra is one of the most iconic giants in the history of Toho films, famously regarded as a guardian of the Earth, so it is very clear that she is on the good side of things. Her sacrifice in the Monsterverse had a huge impact on Godzilla, and it only defines her role in many of the past iterations of the character.

She’s got such a bold personality, despite her inability to emote. There’s something about her presence that’s strangely calming and nurturing. Protective. Hats off to the original incarnation for establishing that.”

Based on the trailer alone, Mothra’s rebirth will definitely signal some role in how the problem will be resolved, or at least, an aid to the protagonist of the story.

The New Empire Teases A Buddy-Cop Dynamics

Mothra’s return was also hinted at in Godzilla vs. Kong, where a podcaster named Bernie Hayes wrote ‘Mothra Pregnancy Theory’ as one of his episode titles. This only adds more pieces of evidence to her or her offspring’s return in future MonsterVerse installments.

Director Adam Wingard revealed fans can expect a buddy-cop sort of type film with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire via his interview with Empire:

There’s a bit of a truce — Godzilla’s in control of the surface world, and Kong is down in Hollow Earth. The buddy-cop dysfunctional relationship dynamic is probably the best one to describe Godzilla and Kong.”

The filmmaker also added that his inspiration for the upcoming movie was the ‘80s, so fans can expect some nostalgic ambiance here.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will arrive in theaters on March 29, 2024.
