Starring Alaqua Cox, the latest MCU series Echo, which premiered on Disney+ recently, seems to mark a positive start to 2024 for the franchise. After her introduction in the 2021 Marvel series Hawkeye, the show follows Maya Lopez embracing her past and Native American Roots. The series, however, also features a significant departure from comics, as Maya goes through a transformative evolution, particularly in terms of her powers, that adds layers of depth and cultural significance to the character.
Marvel’s Echo Features a Revolutionary Shift in Maya’s Powers
Introduced as a supporting character in Daredevil comics, Maya Lopez’s powers were limited to being a highly trained fighter capable of replicating her opponent’s movements, similar to Black Widow‘s Taskmaster. The skill set has been one of the critical points of the character, as many found it somewhat derivative.
However, the Echo director, Sydney Freeland, took a bold step to address this concern by redefining Maya Lopez’s (Alaqua Cox) powers. The series delves into Maya’s Choctaw heritage, offering a cosmic twist by connecting her to a lineage of superpowered women.
Maya’s powers are revealed to be deeply rooted in her matrilineal heritage, tracing back through generations. Her grandmother reveals the cosmic nature of her powers, emerging from her ancestors with each providing unique abilities.
These newly defined powers, ranging from super strength to healing abilities, highlight the complexity and depth of her evolved abilities. The significant shift in her powers not only brings a refreshing twist but also adds a layer of authenticity and cultural resonance to the narrative.

Sydney Freeland on Maya Lopez’s Powers in Comics
Director and executive producer of the show Sydney Freeland has hinted at the significant shift in Maya Lopez’s powers in an earlier interview. As per Variety, she expressed reservations about the characters’ original powers in comics as she referred to them as “lame“.
“Her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It’s kind of lame,” she said during a conversation before adding, “I will say, that is not her power. I’ll just kind of leave it at that.”

There have been discussions about how the showrunners were planning to alter her powers, and the show has finally revealed how the MCU redefined and enhanced Maya’s abilities. While it may not be the sole alteration, it is a notable departure from the original comics.
