Launched in October 2023, Alan Wake 2 is one of the greatest horror games ever made. Remedy’s latest masterpiece scored rave reviews and secured multiple Game of the Year nominations at events like DICE Awards, New York Game Awards, and Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards.
The game was a critical success by all means, but what about commercially? Remedy has just shared an update about an important milestone Alan Wake 2 reached since its launch. How has the game fared sales-wise, and what other projects does Remedy have in the works?
Alan Wake 2 Sells Beyond Expectations
Remedy recently announced that Alan Wake 2 sold 1 million units by the end of December 2023, and is currently sitting at just over 1.3 million copies as of February 2024. The Swedish developer says that it’s officially their fastest-selling game so far, exceeding their expectations substantially.
While this sales milestone is impressive, it doesn’t necessarily translate to immediate financial success for Remedy. Despite outpacing the sales momentum of previous titles like Control, Alan Wake 2 has yet to turn a profit. CEO Tero Virtala acknowledges that the game has “recouped a significant part of the development and marketing expenses,” indicating there’s still work to be done before profitability is achieved.
However, the future looks promising. Remedy expects “excellent long tail sales” for Alan Wake 2, bolstered by upcoming DLC and continued updates for the game. The first DLC, Night Springs, delves into an in-universe TV show featuring familiar faces from the Alan Wake universe, while The Lake House hints at a potential crossover with Control‘s FBC.
Future Remedy Projects
Beyond DLC, Remedy will remain active in the Alan Wake universe, with Control 2 confirmed to be in development in late 2022. No release date was hinted at, and the sequel has yet to move from the proof-of-concept stage as of October 2023, but with Alan Wake 2 now being out, we can expect considerable strides in the next few years.
Remedy is also working on a singular remake of both Max Payne 1 and 2. The project was announced in collaboration with Rockstar Games in 2022. A 2023 Remedy Q&A revealed that the remake has progressed from proof-of-concept to the production readiness stage. Fans are incredibly hyped for a return to the neo-noir world of Max Payne, and it remains to be seen who will take over from the late James McCaffrey for the lead role.
Multiplayer ventures are also a part of Remedy’s future plans, with two games in the works. The first is a co-op spinoff of Control, codenamed Project Condor. Condor will reportedly allow up to four players to team up and fight paranormal threats as agents of the FBC. As of October 2023, Condor has successfully completed its proof-of-concept stage and is now in full production.
However, things haven’t been as smooth sailing for the second project, codenamed Kestrel. Initially envisioned as a F2P live-service game called Vanguard and published by Tencent, Kestrel underwent a significant shift in direction in November 2023. Remedy opted to transform it from a F2P model into a “premium game with a strong, co-operative multiplayer component.” This decision was likely taken due to the lackluster commercial performance of other live-service titles.
The success of Alan Wake 2, alongside the ongoing development of Control and future plans for both franchises, solidify Remedy’s position as a leading force in the gaming industry. While Alan Wake 2 may not have reached profitability yet, the strong sales performance and ongoing development efforts paint a positive picture for the future of both the game and the studio. Fans can look forward to further exploration within these captivating universes, with exciting projects on the horizon.
