Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem starred in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales as Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Armando Salazar respectively. Both actors have also become recipients of numerous accolades over the years, yet despite their Oscars nods for Best Actor, they haven’t won any.
Bardem received Oscar nominations for Best Actor in Before Night Falls (2001), Biutiful (2011), and Being the Ricardos (2022), while Depp earned the same nominations for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2004), Finding Neverland (2005), and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2008).
Javier Bardem And Johnny Depp Disclose Their Opinions On Winning Oscars Awards
Javier Bardem spoke with The Guardian and revealed his honest feelings about winning an Oscars. While he felt happy receiving such a prestigious title, he did not seem to see any of its significance. He stated:
“When I won the Oscar, I felt great, but it didn’t make any sense. It was more: ‘Wow, what is this? I need to earn this now so they don’t take it out of my hands!’”
Indeed, Bardem was the first Spanish actor to win an Oscars for Best Supporting Actor in 2007’s No Country for Old Men. While others love the recognition of earning an award, Johnny Depp admitted he never liked winning such prizes for the reason that he did not want to go up the stage and talk. The actor confessed via BBC Newsbeat:
“I don’t want to win one of those things ever, you know. I don’t want to have to talk. They gave me one of those things, like a nomination, two or three times. A nomination is plenty.”
Depp further remarked he does not like being put in a rivalry with someone. Instead, he likes doing his own thing without the pressure of having to outdo others:
“The idea of winning means that you’re in competition with someone, and I’m not in competition with anybody. I just stick to my guns and do what I want to do. Sometimes people don’t like it, but that’s alright.”
Bardem and Depp are both equally talented actors who truly deserve to win an Oscars award after numerous nominations.
What It Means To Win A Prestigious Oscars Award
Does winning an Oscars award mean anything? Of course, the celebrated event honors and recognizes the hard work of every actor and filmmaker in the industry. Moreover, winning an award also puts a touch of credibility on the recipient, making the person more marketable to producers and agents.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst, told MarketWatch:
“It’s like any resume where you’re able to list a monumental achievement in your field. It’s a huge marketing hook — even Academy Award nominees still have that cited on movie posters years later.”
Even though Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp have never won an Oscars for Best Actor, it never affected their reputation as movie stars. They still end up doing a lot of projects because they are influential and well-loved by fans.
