Ed Sheeran, who began writing songs at the age of eleven, needs no introduction. He is an extremely talented singer-songwriter, who is adept at conveying strong emotions and knows exactly what listeners want to hear at the moment.
So why is it said that he is creating a crypt for himself?
The talented international music star recently admitted to digging his own grave in his backyard. Yes, in a candid interview, he casually mentioned that he had prepared his own final resting place as a unique but morbid precaution. The 32-year-old Grammy winner talked openly about the supposed crypt that he allegedly constructed on his estate in England, and it turns out that it is not a rumor.
Ed Sheeran, 32, Has Already Dug His Own Grave In His Backyard
After a difficult year, Ed Sheeran admitted that he had already made preparations for the day when the 32-year-old would pass away. The singer morbidly revealed that his grave is prepared and waiting for him inside the private chapel in his backyard.
The Bad Habits singer revealed in an interview with GQ (on Oct. 4) that he has a crypt built on his opulent estate in England. The father of two explained to the outlet that it is really more of a chapel:
“I wouldn’t say it’s a crypt. It’s a hole that’s dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there.”
While the chapel was being built, Sheeran expressed his desire for his daughters to be able to visit him there. His fans and friends have reacted to the news in a variety of ways. Some are intrigued by his nontraditional approach to end-of-life issues, while others worry about his well-being as the British singer-songwriter further added:
“People think it’s really weird and really morbid, but I’ve had friends die without wills, and no one knows what to do.”
The four-time Grammy winner completed the chapel’s construction last year, and according to his neighbors reportedly told Vanity Fair, they “have grave misgivings” about approving it. He found it to be so lovely that he decided he wanted to be buried there, leaving his two daughters from his marriage to Cherry Seaborn with a place to visit in his honor.
Ed Sheeran Has Had A Challenging Year
In March 2023, Ed Sheeran revealed (via BBC) that his wife Cherry Seaborn, whom he married in 2019, was informed she had a tumor while she was expecting their second child. In addition, there was
“No route to treatment until after the birth.”
Earlier this year, in Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All, a Disney+ docuseries, he talked about what it was like to find out that his pregnant wife had been diagnosed with cancer.
Sheeran and Seaborn, who generally avoid the spotlight, have a heart-to-heart as she discussed why she chose to participate in the documentary in the first episode, Love. She said (via PEOPLE):
“I got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year which was a massive s—ter. It made me massively reflect on our mortality. I would never agree to do anything like this but it made me think, ‘Oh if I died, what’s people’s perception of me? What do you leave behind?’”
Seaborn further added:
“For Ed, the whole point is he wants to say to people, ‘I’m not just this music machine. I’m not just this robot that tries to get No. 1. I’m a father, I’m a son, I’m a friend.’ It wasn’t until this year when I was like, ‘I might die.’”
Sheeran, 32, said that his wife was downplaying the situation in a much more serious tone and eventually broke down in tears as he claimed:
“It was horrible.”
They announced the birth of their second daughter on May 19, 2022. Well, as his fans and admirers, we can respect his candor and expect him and his family to have a peaceful life ahead of him.
