“I wouldn’t say it’s a crypt. It’s a hole that’s dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there.”

While the chapel was being built, Sheeran expressed his desire for his daughters to be able to visit him there. His fans and friends have reacted to the news in a variety of ways. Some are intrigued by his nontraditional approach to end-of-life issues, while others worry about his well-being as the British singer-songwriter further added:

“People think it’s really weird and really morbid, but I’ve had friends die without wills, and no one knows what to do.”

The four-time Grammy winner completed the chapel’s construction last year, and according to his neighbors reportedly told Vanity Fair, they “have grave misgivings” about approving it. He found it to be so lovely that he decided he wanted to be buried there, leaving his two daughters from his marriage to Cherry Seaborn with a place to visit in his honor.

“I got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year which was a massive s—ter. It made me massively reflect on our mortality. I would never agree to do anything like this but it made me think, ‘Oh if I died, what’s people’s perception of me? What do you leave behind?’”

Seaborn further added:

“For Ed, the whole point is he wants to say to people, ‘I’m not just this music machine. I’m not just this robot that tries to get No. 1. I’m a father, I’m a son, I’m a friend.’ It wasn’t until this year when I was like, ‘I might die.’”

Sheeran, 32, said that his wife was downplaying the situation in a much more serious tone and eventually broke down in tears as he claimed:

“It was horrible.”
