The PlayStation Portal is a unique handheld device with the sole purpose of functioning as a remote-play device. The gaming community had high hopes for this device; however, it is far from what was thought and many believed it was another expensive paperweight that would likely be forgotten in a few months.
Many naysayers continued to make fun of the handheld device and claimed it had no value other than being an extra DualSense controller with a screen in the middle. Granted, they are not far off, but it is selling well in the UK and proves people are interested.

The world has been asking for a new PlayStation handheld in the past and it is safe to say not everyone was amused with the main functionality of the remote play device. Regardless of what others might think, the numbers do not lie and prove that the Portal has found a strong market in the United Kingdom and people are interested in what the device can do.

The gaming company recently updated the device with essential features that could have helped convince the gaming community to pick one up from the shelves. According to a recent sales chart, the remote-play device has been in the top 1 or 2 spot as the best-selling accessory for gaming in the United Kingdom.
The device was updated to work well in public Wi-Fi which is a massive win for owners who wish to take their PlayStation 5 with them anywhere they go and use it as long as it has established a strong connection.
Many would argue that the Portal would likely never leave the household or stray too far from a PS5, and Sony Interactive Entertainment is working towards making it an essential handheld device for players to secure.

The gaming industry is slowly shifting towards a future where gaming handhelds will likely be all the rage. Recent listings suggest that Sony is looking into developing a new dedicated handheld without being tethered to any console and playing games natively which could be viewed as a spiritual successor to the original PSP and the short-lived PS Vita.
It has been a while since Sony released a dedicated handheld and given the success of the Nintendo Switch and recent PC handhelds like the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and more, it would make sense for one of the leading gaming companies to dip its toes in the space of handheld gaming.
The Portal had a few questionable features and lack thereof, but the gaming community now has a gist of where this handheld device can flourish. It may be the most expensive paperweight if an owner does not have a PS5 or good internet; however, these can be easily checked.
Sony Interactive Entertainment took a different approach with this device and now paying off. Perhaps the company will continue to update the device to appeal to the larger community.
