When it comes to films and TV shows, no matter how exceptionally well they started, no matter how amazingly well they continued, if it doesn’t have an equally exceptional, or at least satisfactory conclusion, then it all comes crashing down. Game of Thrones being the perfect example.

This HBO series was such a groundbreaking and revolutionary piece of television entertainment that it completely changed what the silver screen stood for. But alas, due to a horrible last season, people remember it with more disappointment than reverence.

Naturally, it came as a shock to the audience as to how the co-creators of the show, David Benioff and D.B Weiss, could’ve missed the mark so badly, but it wasn’t a shock to them. In fact, they expected some amount of backlash from the fandom, but not to this extent.

In a recent interview, their comment has now enraged the fans to a whole new level as it hints that they knew it was bad, but still went ahead with it.

Imagine creating one of the most popular and exceptional pieces of entertainment in the history of the industry that even revolutionized the silver screen as we know it, only for it to end up becoming one of the most despised and disappointing shows in history as well.

But alas, this is what Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did with the controversial last season of the show that permanently marred its legacy.

The reason why the finale season of the show was so awfully put together with obvious rush work and execution was that they had just received the offer to make new shows and even films for the Star Wars franchise, which they were excited about. But this rush to wrap everything up ended up becoming their downfall, and in the end, even their offer was taken back by Lucasfilm.

Keeping this in mind, when asked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast by host Josh Horowitz about their expectations of the public reception for Season 8 of their series, Benioff said that they expected the hatred, but not in such a daunting amount and more half and half. He said:

“I think we knew it would be controversial, I think we hoped for it to be a little bit more 50/50 you know. I think you hope for a better proportion. Definitely didn’t want it to be quite so much hate. We were prepared for it, but I think I hadn’t really taken into account the network effects that can help a show.”

This recent comment is not sitting well with fans of their series, who claim that they were well aware of the work they put into the last season, for which they should’ve expected a ton of backlash.

As can be expected from the fans, they were heavily invested in the series as it progressed, which is why when the epic conclusion that everyone expected wasn’t epic at all, they were disappointed. And now, the creators almost accepting the fact that they did a lackluster job with it isn’t helping them.
