Despite having a number of iconic characters in his bag, Ken just might have one of the most career-defining moments in Ryan Gosling’s career. And thus, it is not that easy to leave that behind. Barbie not only was one of the movies that took the world by storm but also the box office, all thanks to the directorial greatness of Greta Gerwig. Although already known as somewhat of an icon, after Barbie’s billion-dollar success, her name has now been cemented.
And as Gosling moves forward from Barbie and joins forces with the Oppenheimer star, Emily Blunt, it turns out he still can’t quite leave the Gerwig magic behind. Blunt recently revealed that her character in The Fall Guys was based on the Barbie director.
Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy Co-Star Based Her Character on Greta Gerwig!
Greta Gerwig is undeniably an icon of the current generation. In an industry that is often associated with tough and rough directors, she stands out as a breath of fresh air, getting things done with warmth and charm.
Her films like Little Women, Lady Bird, and Frances Ha showcase her exceptional talent as a director. She proves that a director doesn’t always have to fit the stereotype of an old, grumpy white man to create cinematic masterpieces. So, when Emily Blunt was given the responsibility to portray a director on-screen on her latest, The Fall Guy, she didn’t hesitate to draw inspiration from Gerwig.
In an interview with Total Magazine (via Game Radar), Emily Blunt revealed,
“With the warmth and the charm, I guess there’s a little Greta in there,–She was a mix of a few other people I’d met and pulled from.”
Although she revealed that the character wasn’t entirely based on her, Emily Blunt admitted to sprinkling in some of the “warmth and charm” that Gerwig brings with her everywhere.
Blunt also added further details about her character in The Fall Guy, Jody Moreno, she said
“We all kind of built her together, because I think, maybe in the original script, she was quite severe, and that sort of tough director,–But I think, for me, it’s always more interesting to play someone who’s in a situation where they’re way over their head.”
Thus, it can easily be said that although some might think Ryan Gosling‘s next venture aimed to break away from Barbie, the trail will follow him in some way or another until the end of time.
Ryan Gosling’s Thoughts on Greta Gerwig’s Oscar Snub
It is no secret that the internet violently protested and grieved after the news of Gerwig and Margot Robbie not being nominated for the Oscar spread. Despite delivering one of the highest-grossing and most talked-about films of the year, the director was snubbed at the Oscars.
Meanwhile, other Barbie stars, America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling, received nominations. When asked about his feelings regarding this, Gosling made it clear in a statement (via Harpers Bazar).
“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,–No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
He continued,
“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture, and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.”
Ryan Gosling is a die-hard Greta Gerwig fan, much like the rest of the world. While he may strive to move forward from Barbie, he can never leave behind the warmth and love he received from his fans and co-stars, especially the push from Gerwig that shaped him into the best Ken there ever is.
The Fall Guy comes out on 3rd May 2024 in theaters.
