The once fairytale romance of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, which started with Cruise jumping on top of a couch during his appearance at The Oprah Winfrey Show, and processing his love for Holmes, came to an in 2012, when the latter filed for divorce. The divorce came as a surprise to many, allegedly including Cruise himself. What was even more heartbreaking to witness, was how the once beloved relationship between a father and daughter started disintegrating in front of all our eyes.
Before his separation and eventual divorce with Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise was a doting father to his daughter Suri Cruise, who has born in 2006. But since going their separate ways, their relationship has dwindled to the extent that Suri, who just turned 18, now refuses to acknowledge her father.
Suri Cruise Refuses to Acknowledge Tom Cruise
On April 18, 2024, Suri Cruise turned 18 years of age. Since her parents divorce, Suri has stayed with her mother, Katie Holmes, in New York, while her father retained visitation rights, along with paying for child support. Until now, Cruise has paid Holmes a sum of $400k annually, which he won’t need to continue now that Suri has legally turned an adult.
But even after all this, Suri refuses to acknowledge her father’s existence in her life. Daily Mail recently reported that Suri has no interest in sparking her almost non-existent relationship with her father.
“Suri will not have any contact with her father, despite being 18, and even if he called, she would not answer. He does not exist to Katie or Suri, and his daughter does not want to rely on him for anything.”
Further adding salt to wounds, Suri allegedly refers to having only one parent – her mother.
“She feels that she has one parent, and that is her mother.”
Since moving to New York after the divorce, Katie Holmes is often spotted out with her daughter, having a good laugh and enjoying their time together.
Suri Cruise’s Plans For Her Future
While both her parents are big names in Hollywood, Suri Cruise, reportedly, has no interest in joining the fray. She enjoys being a private citizen and would like to continue having that luxury in life. Living in New York has been good for her as well as her mother, and they both enjoy a close relationship.
Neither Holmes nor Tom Cruise spoke about why they divorced back in the day, but sources close to the ex-couple said it was because Holmes wanted to keep Suri away from the clutches of Scientology, which is still a pretty big part of her father’s life. He himself once admitted during a testimony against Bauer Media, that Scientology was one of the reasons behind the divorce.
Now that Suri has turned 18, she is looking to move on in her life, without having to convince herself of having a relationship with her father. She wants to go to school, preferably in the direction of fashion, but wants to stay close to her mother, which is why she is prioritizing staying in New York.
