Dr Disrespect is at it again and this time Call of Duty is under his crosshair. The popular video game streamer is often in the news, be it discussing the state of the industry or getting subdued by other YouTubers. In 2020, he was banned from the game streaming platform Twitch. Why? It is still a mystery for everyone to this date.
He launched his AAA gaming studio dubbed Midnight Society where a shooter game called Deadrop is being developed. However, fans weren’t happy about it as the game incorporates non-fungible tokens (NFTs), a technology often disgraced by the gaming community.
Number of Fancy Skins Are Growing in Call of Duty
In a recent video that he removed from his channel, he slammed Call of Duty for allegedly spending a fortune on Spawn, an in-game character. Furthermore, he went on to comment on the entire gaming industry. He said,
The state of this industry, I don’t know where we’re at, man. It’s not what I grew up with. It was literally about playing the games and the fun aspect of interacting with games, but now people are getting hyped off high-production video pieces. We need to bring the culture of this industry back.
Appears like he is proud of his game Deadrop while he continues to crack down on the industry. He compared his game to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 while calling its engine outdated. The video is a testament to the fact that parents will always love their children, no matter how ugly they are.
Furthermore, he also compared single-player and role-playing games to multiplayer games in the latest video. He believes that online games are focused more on bringing cosmetics while calling RPGs and single-player games “best it’s ever been.”
Words and Actions Don’t Align Here
While Herschel Beahm (yes, this guy has a name) talks about the fun aspect, he himself is developing a game with a technology that already kills the ‘fun aspect’. Players have long argued that integrating elements like NFTs will kill the entertainment value and make the games more about money and not ‘fun’.
For the ones unaware of NFTs, they are in-game items (or sometimes an image of something, like a monkey) that can be traded in the real world for real money. There are a few games like Animoca Brands’ The Sandbox that use it. However, almost all the games incorporating the technology are just dead ducks in a wider gaming market.
No matter how Mr. Beahm criticizes the industry, it won’t change the fact that he and his game are a part of a different ‘Society’ until such technologies become mainstream.
