Staying true to its comic roots, Invincible has largely pivoted away from Omni-Man in its second season. After nearly beating his son to death in Season One, the J.K. Simmons-led character undergoes an emotional journey and finds his new home in Thraxa after saving their people from a black hole.

However, the character has remained largely absent in Season Two since the show’s premiere after getting gravely injured while battling the Viltrumites alongside his son and is ultimately taken into custody. Reflecting on his little appearance this season, Simmons elaborated on the character’s future moving forward.

While Invincible has taken its fair share of creative liberties, the creators have closely followed Robert Kirkman’s comic in terms of Omni-Man’s story so far. Similar to the comics, Season Two has largely swayed away from the Viltrumite father.

Reflecting on the route the creatives have taken, J.K Simmons stressed not only does it help create room for more world-building, but it also builds a sense of mystery surrounding Nolan.

He told Screen Rant:

“And the stretches where we’re not seeing much, I think it’s a really interesting creative choice to not only focus on other things, but to build that sort of anticipation and that sort of mystery of what the hell is going on with Nolan while we’re not focused on him. So, yeah, to me, it’s all a part of keeping it fresh.”

Fortunately, the Whiplash Star confirmed that we will see more of Nolan in Season 3, but “it’ll continue to sort of wax and wane”, meaning his appearances might heavily depend on the story’s requirements.

J.K. Simmons Doesn’t See Himself Fit for a Live-Action Omni-Man

Although it’s hard to imagine anyone in the role of Omni-Man other than the Whiplash Star, he expressed that he can’t see himself helming the character in a potential live-action adaptation. While the actor is no stranger to getting jacked, considering he is long past his prime and is inching toward 70, it’s reasonable to see why he doesn’t consider himself fit for a potential live-action feature.

He said:

“Well, we’ve seen how jacked I can get eight or nine years ago, and since I have not dipped into the marvel of modern medical science in efforts to get jacked, I just eat protein and lift weights. I don’t think a 70-year-old Omni-Man is what I would want to see in the movie.”

But there is one actor whom J.K. Simmons could see bringing the maturity and gravitas of the character onscreen, which involves the Logan Star Hugh Jackman. While Simmons isn’t sure if Jackman would be open to the idea of playing Nolan, taking Jackman’s physique and acting chops into account, he could be the perfect actor to carry the mantle forward.
