One of the questions posed to Khavari was about the inspiration behind Star Wars Outlaws and whether the team drew from existing material like The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi: Shadows of the Empire. Khavari revealed his fondness for the Shadows of the Empire game, confessing:

I loved Shadows of the Empire growing up, and I’m pretty sure I melted my N64 the amount of times I played it.

Despite his attachment to previous games in the franchise, Khavari emphasized that Star Wars Outlaws is forging its own path:

We really want to deliver something that fans and players alike haven’t seen or experienced before.

He did confirm the presence of Jabba the Hutt in the game and hinted at the possibility of additional cameos, so you’ve still got plenty of surprises you can uncover yourself.

Another significant aspect of the interview was the discussion surrounding the game’s placement in the Star Wars timeline. Star Wars Outlaws is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, a period ripe with storytelling potential.

Khavari expressed his enthusiasm for this era, describing it as “a writer’s dream” due to the high stakes and sheer number of narrative opportunities. For Khavari and his team, the decision to explore the underworld during this period was a natural fit:

Placing our game during this time, I mean, that speaks to the power of that era, but also to the fact that there’s so much to explore in the underworld from a scoundrel perspective in that time period.

Central to the game’s narrative is the character of Kay, a rookie scoundrel navigating the treacherous underworld. Khavari spoke about her role amid the chaos of the galactic civil war. “This is a character who is just trying to get by stealing, outwitting, conning folks,” Khavari remarked.
