Despite following the traditional formula and kickstarting their new cinematic universe with their most prominent characters, James Gunn is set to take a different approach for his new DCU. The Suicide Squad director is adamant about bringing the Comic book giant back on track after the failure of its previous universe. Many notable stars, including David Harbour and Frank Grillo, have joined forces with the DC Boss for the first entry in his ambitious cinematic universe.
For now, the actors will be voicing their respective characters in the upcoming animated series. However, they are also set to portray the characters after their shift from animation to live-action.
David Harbour and Frank Grillo join forces with DCU’s upcoming Creature Commandos
The cast for the upcoming show Creature Commandos, a seven-episode animated series that is being completely written by James Gunn, is set to feature Stranger Things star David Harbour. However, this will not be the first time that David Harbour will be seen playing a comic book character. The actor who rose to stardom for playing the role of Jim Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things has portrayed his fair share of comic book characters, including Hellboy and MCU’s Red Guardian.
And David Harbour isn’t the only MCU star who will be joining the team of misfits in DCU’s first chapter. Frank Grillo, known for playing the role of Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and reprising his role in multiple other MCU projects, will also be seen leading the team of Monsters. The actor is set to play the role of Rick Flag Sr. across all media in the new DCU, whereas Harbour will be portraying the role of Eric Frankenstein.
Alongside the MCU stars, actors including Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, and Sean Gunn will also be joining the team of monsters. But considering that Steve Agee will be reprising his role as John Economos in the series, it seems that the show will see a shift in its timeline as compared to its source material.
Creature Commandos‘ timeline might be updated in comparison to the comics
The team of Creature Commandos is a precursor to the Suicide Squad in the comics, which was brought together during the Second World War to fight against the Nazis. But bearing in mind that the DCU version of the team will be reportedly working under Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and the supervision of Steve Agee’s John Economos, it’s reasonable to assume that the series’ timeline will witness some changes compared to the comics.
James Gunn’s love for the outcasts and misfits is responsible for creating some of the best DC and MCU stories by using B-tier characters. It’s safe to say that the future of the upcoming entry in the new DCU is in safe hands.
